Four French horns: I composed Five Variations on Good King Wenceslas 15 years ago (can it be that long?!) for my horn quartet, called the Horn Buskers. Ah, those were the days. Now, I use the first variation as my ringtone. smiley

excellent variations and development of your tune. I played it again and again and I like it more each time... especially when you get into multi-part counterpoint. Nicely done, and perfect for the holiday season.

What a lovely "lullaby". I woke up at 2 am, couldn't sleep - brought this up on my iPhone and slept like a babe the rest of the night.

I like the subtle percussion in the back-ground. The sustained cello & bass lines. Orchestration is definitely your forte.

Thank you & Sweet dreams.

ambient, yes, and a little apocalyptic: Excellent layering of elements in an almost random fashion, it almost forces me to keep "listening back" to give each new element a context, and then there's another new element. Bravo, Andreas. Bravo indeed.

Variations on Au Clair de la Lune by mlpbadarak 3 years ago
interesting thoughts - thank you!

so, maybe I should wait until the whole track is finished before I add any reverb or special effects. also, it seems to me the whole file is louder than it needs to be. I started out at pp, and by the time we get to the last variation at forte, it's much too loud. These might be a "Finale" bug. It's one of the problems with a "classical" style that the technology doesn't compensate for dynamic contrasts - it's all basically one peak dynamic level.
Variations on Au Clair de la Lune by mlpbadarak 3 years ago
Can somebody tell me how to get rid of this background noise in the beginning of these garageband files? Is it something with the mic settings? is it the combination of imported soundfiles and live recordings? or maybe it's the garageband "special effects" - I used "Live Performance" with most of the tracks, but for the bell tree (which was recorded live) I used "Ambient voices"

I eliminated the master-track, then used an .aif track of midi & sampled instruments for my master. That should have been noise free - but then I did live recording of my singing and it may be that track was open and recording for the duration of the piece? but I clipped and faded that track...

mmm... it's a mystery

Grotesqueries for Orchestra - First Movement by soulima 3 years ago
It was only a year or two ago that I learned the difference between a gargoyle and a grotesque: that the gargoyle is a decorated water drain and the grotesque has no function, it is merely decorative - to entertain. At the same time I've always believed that "entertainment" is nourishing. So here you've created this fine grotesquerie and it is vastly entertaining, memorable, colorful, fun - it is a thing in itself! Fantastic!
Symphony in E Major - First Movement (draft) by soulima 3 years ago
your thematic treatment is always so uplifting! it just makes my heart swell! I think the essence is in the orchestration, and layering of voices (listen to those little bells in the background!) There is great texture and dynamic contrast, and it's all so very coherent.

In short - Bravo, John. You've done it again. You make me smile and I always feel so good when I listen to your music. Bravo, again. Bravo.

FiveOneFour by georgeptingley 3 years ago
This is great!
The music theorist in me wants to know: tell me about "4-1-5" (or is it your area code?) Nice layering of components - expecially the occasional percussion interjections like the timpani and bell. I especially like the doubling-up of rhythmic activity, though there are places where I wish the rhythm-loop was more background.

But, as we used to say on American Bandstand - "this is great to dance to. I give it a 10!"
