Biography
Hi, I'm Sharon - I was born toward the latter part of the baby-boomer years in Baltimore. My maternal grandmother came to live with us when I was born and, as my parents both worked, she was very instrumental in my rearing. She grew up in a folk music family (her dad played fiddle, her brother banjo and she guitar); they farmed all week then played at dances and picnics and such on weekends. She started teaching me guitar when I was 11, and I have tinkered with folk, country, and blues ever since. I have no formal vocal or guitar training, so I might be considered kinda "rustic" but hey, that's just me! I took piano lessons as a kid, so that gave me some rudimentary "real" music knowledge.
I have been married 20+ years to a kind and patient (THANK GAWD) man who is not a music-type himself and sometmes scratches his head in bewilderment at the songs I write, sometimes radiates approval at them, and sometimes about gags. So he's probably a pretty good barometer! We have a 21 year old son, who is struggling to find himself; we hope he does soon and preferably where he can afford the rent (just kidding, he's a good kid for a 19-year old!).
By day, I am a technical writer and have worked for government contractors for the last 19 or so years. I also teach various business and technical writing courses part time at local colleges.
I performed a lot YEEEEEEEEAAAARRRSS ago, in college and through my late 20s. Then I kind of let it go after that and am now going through a kind of "born-again" phase musically. I've joined some local songwriting groups and am lining up lots of shows and folk festivals. I write songs mostly as a creative exercise and to entertain myself and tell stories about places, people, things....I am not much on messages or conveying anything very "deep" I guess, though I appreciate those who can write with thought and conviction.
In June of 2004, we finally fulfilled our dream of moving to Florida. Along with the many other blessing we have experienced since that move has come a LOT of inspiration to me song-wise. So I will apologize in advance for any overkill on my part when it comes to Florida-themed songs!
