So very lovely - and the background music is perfect! While there is some great free verse and "experimental" type poetry around, it is wonderful to hear a nice traditional structured, rhyming piece. It is beautiful tribute and story. Thanks for sharing!

I must say Bob, you have captured the situational essence of the song most succinctly. But your version, like, takes away all the poetry.... smiley !

You are great - to be able to sustain the tune and timing so perfectly w/o music. You should pick up 100s$ in tips at pubs! Thanks for the LIFT!

Dude you are killing me! What a concept - a red CORVAIR unsafe at any speed! You have inspired me - I'm gong to write a song about my first car, a PINTO which, fortunately, I didn't get rear-ended in. Now, that has got a lot of racey-raunchy possibilities.....hmmmm....Your song is way out there - great contrast between the real traditional 60s-sounding guitar riffs, the smooth vocals, and the wacky lyrics - thanks for the ride!!!!

aaahhh gawd - this is hysterical! The contrast between the mundane, supposed-to-be cheery little perks of the job and the chorus is fantastic! Thanks for the lift!

Hi - I'm new to the site and just trying to get caught up on the country and folk songs here. This is a really interesting and original song - a little retro, in that the sound reminds me some of the '60s folk-pop songs. But the lyrics are very contemporary. An engaging song - thanks!

I am new to this site so am surfing the songs looking for all country and folk type stuff - I know this has been up a long time, am just getting caught up! This was a really enjoyable song - not the same-old-same-old, a little different kind of beat and tune, so nicely sung. Thanks for the entertainment!

hahaha - I'm trying to get caught up listening to the Artists I've found most interesting, so I know this has been out a long time and I'm commenting way late. It makes me think of the Ramones as adults; like, Sheena Was A Punk Rocker But Is A Real Drag Now So Why The Hell Did I Marry Her? Very cool twist on the whole thing.

Thanks for listening, everybody - it makes my day to know it was enjoyed! And KDMan, serendipity is one of my all time favorite words; one so seldom gets a chance to hear it !

You say you think your musical ability is limited, but I don't see any shortcomings in the music at all - the playing has a longing, lamenting quality that matches the story perfectly. And the timing is very interesting, how the hook line is kind of run-in to verse before. I agree with theDRP's question about the length - it does see a little long.

Hi - I know this has been out a long time, but since I am new here, am surfing the site, esp for country and folk. I got a real kick out of this (haha - not by a mule in the head, fortunately). I like hearing someone use a genre to poke fun at the genre itself -such as the immortal Steve Goodman song, enhanced by DA Coe, You Never Even Called Me By My Name. Thanks -I think is is important to have fun and a sense of humor about music! (I don't put any ratings for perf and prod because I have lousy sound and nothing ever sounds its best).

I really enjoyed this. I love American folk music, and I love to hear new, creative treatments of old standards. The little history lesson is great, too - I never knew the song was about real horses! If you have not seen a movie with Stacey and James Keech called The Longriders (about the James brothers and gang), from maybe the late 70s or early 80s, I recommend it to you esp for the music. Ry Cooder plays great stuff in it, reminiscent of this a little. Thanks for a lovely start to Monday morning!

This comes across to me sophisticated and innocent at the same time; a "take your time" but "I-can't-wait" dialog. Behind the quick beat, through the lyrics, there is the message to take it easy, it'll work out. So to me it is an interesing mix of contrasts integral to any stage of life when we are trying to re-group and go on. Very artful.

This song evokes a lot of interesting emotions - regret and expectation at the same time. I have always been a story-oriented kind of person, and am trying to learn to appreciate songs that don't tell a story so much as imply or intimate one and leaves a lot of fill-in-the-blanks. This one does just that, and I like it a lot.

I am a major movie person, so it seems like every time I listen to instrumentals, I am always thinking of movie themes. This sounds to me like a Kill Bill type of movie background - or, in general, an understated thriller/suspense-film type of background sound. It makes me think of an ominous drive through a desert, with who-know-what waiting where. It has a sophisticated and somewhat dark tone to me.

I should (and will) stop bothering you about this song, but it should be on Deadwood - SERIOUSLY. I have listened to it 4 times, and it is a perfect Deadwood song.

I put this right up there with one of my all time folk instrumental favorites, Pete Seeger's Living in the Country - a very nice repetitive theme, with imaginative wanderings around it. I got to see Pete play it up close once(well, a close up on TV smiley) so I learned to play a few bars of it.

Write wonderful loving songs for your kids while they're small - I wrote what I consider a very lovely song for my son when he was about 3, and I'm glad I did cause he's 19 now and I mostly want to stick my foot up his butt!

I agree with the comment that you have no shortcomings on production (or anything else). A very haunting melody, and the harmonies almost create an echoing effect. I like the repeating of the chorus - it becomes almost a plaintive, lamenting chant. Your vocal range and flexibility are impressive and sustain interest throughout.

This is a powerful mood-setting piece - dark, surreal - and it seems to build almost to a desparate frenzy by the end, with the guys betting and the girls laughing and this poor soul disoriented, reeling in this strange place of strange tongues. Very effective - it reminds me of Bob Dylan's Highway 61/Blonde on Blonde era (or I maybe showing just showing what an antique I am with that reference!!!)

I heard and commented on your Motel song first, so maybe there was just no other song that could adequately follow that one up for me! But I had a hard time catching on to this one - now, that's not to say that I'm not just a little dense; things don't have to be *too* subtle to swwwwwwish right by me. I had to listen twice to this one to fully grasp the talking-money scenario - which is awesomely clever and original but somehow, for me at least, something misses the mark here. Actually (again, this is me; I am always seeing the funny side of things), I think it could be tweeked to be a more humerous story.

THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH STARS FOR THIS SONG. Now, I am one who will always be honest when I feel something is off/missing the mark (and I expect to get the same), but this one had me mesmerized. The delivery is kind of John Prine+Bob Dylan+Warren Zevon plus something totally uniquely you. I can imagine this song being done by a band, slickly produced, a Poncho and Lefty sound in a minor key - but in a way it would almost be a crime, your own delivery is so haunting and unique.

I find the contrast between the fast-strumming/beat and the slower, pausing pace of the lyrics quite intriguing. And I agree with the previous comment that the guitar sounds great - the chords are often nontraditional and take interesting turns. I would only say that sometimes the lyrics seem to come *too* slowly; sometimes the delay til the next line seems too long. Maybe that is intentional and meant to reinforce the pensive/thoughtful quality of the lyrics(?), but sometimes the gaps seem too long.

*PS* - I am new to this forum and originally gave 3 stars for Perf and Prod. What I intended was just neutral on those because my sound system is so lousy I can't really judge anything except the most basic words and music. So I should've just gone with "no rating" on those - that's why I'm sending an edit.
