SMAF: emperors will still be emperors by ponkey 1 year ago
Thanks for the comments, guys!

Pharmakeus: more conventional, yes, perhaps. I found the previous arrangement incredibly boring though - had it been a live drummer playing repetitively (but with a human touch) it might have worked, but unfortunately all my drums are loops. Hopefully I've hidden it enough that most listeners won't pay too much attention to that.

Shadow: yes, this is still the pinhole mic, now in a MacBook. I do have a regular mic and preamp but it doesn't sound as good - the pinhole manages to pick up a fuller tonal range in my voice while minimising background noise. It really is a miracle of modern engineering. As for the vocal levels, yeah, I think it's difficult to make out the lyrics in some points - but as the lyrics were more thrown together than finely honed I'm not really too concerned about that. They're there to add a layer of vocal texture rather than meaning, so I think I'm going to leave the mix as it is. Thanks for the constructive feedback, though!

Gossamer, I checked - the album, with 18 tracks so far, adds up to twelve minutes and twenty seven seconds. That's an average of under forty-two seconds per song. With the exception of Have yourself a merry little Christmas, where I break style for Christmas Eve, there is only one song that breaks the one minute mark. But yes, each one will fit in your stocking - or behind an advent calendar door!
Running up the hill by 4haengs 2 years ago
Good song! I was kind of expecting a cover of Kate Bush, and I'm glad this isn't one. I mean, Kate Bush is great, but I'm always happier to hear an original than a cover...

Constructive feedback follows: Drums, keyboards and acoustic guitars sound great. Lead electric guitars are a little muddy in the middle of the mix there... perhaps try double tracking and panning the two parts into stereo. And I would turn down the echo on the vocals - I found it a little distracting from the song.

This sounds like Christmas pudding tastes - and it's full of sixpences. There's lots of very odd noises in here that I almost broke my teeth on, but when I pulled them out I discovered I was a little bit richer. And the whole thing is on fire! I don't think my sister would like it, which also fits with the christmas pudding extended metaphor.

Why was I expecting Englebert Humperdink?

When I read the lyrics it reminded me a bit of Laurie Anderson's song walking and falling. Not just the fact that it uses the word falling - I could imagine Laurie Anderson reading the lyrics over this music, too. (I actually listened to it again and did my own Laurie Anderson impersonation over the top. In my head - and probably nowhere else - it worked great!)

I love your guitar tone. The whole piece is very filmic.

Incidentally, since you have "disabled ratings on this song, indicating that constructive comments would be appreciated," I thought the drum intro/outro was a bit of a cop out. Your vocals and guitar work are both very strong so I would start the song with those. Perhaps an "overture" - a little fragment of the guitar and vocal plays for four bars before disappearing and being followed by the drum intro as it is now. (Actually I'm just mentioning this after listening back to a few of my own incomplete songs and realising that each of them has exactly the same intro - bad habits...)

Who is the girl with the blackest eyes, by the way?

As Up implies, you've got some good base material here. Perhaps it needs some production work to get the most out of it. The drum pattern is good, but could perhaps use a filter or plugin of some kind to give it a harder/dirtier sound. I have the same problem on my own beats - but like I say, it's a good pattern and definitely worth developing the sound. Same with the piano. I would advise experimenting with sounds...

Grrrr! Yaaaarrrrggghhh! Growwllll! are all good words to describe the guitar sound here. I like your guitar sound. This is a two to three hour cover so obviously it doesn't sound like something that you've been polishing for weeks, but I've got to say I'd love to be able to put something together like this even in two to three days. I should start working on my technique.

In the last minute or so, I could almost hear a kind of men's falsetto going "de doo do do doooh!" as a background vocal - I think it was just in my head, but it worked well. You could consider that next time! I actually can't recall hearing a Dylan falsetto...

"very sort of modern rockish" is right. Up, you need to find yourself a regular singer to work with. But not a rock singer - someone with a very soft, gentle voice (like Pete Doherty or the girl from Arcade Fire) or a very non-singing singer voice (like the guy from Arcade Fire). The less the singer fits this style of music the more interesting the results would be. That's my two penn'orth...

Plink-Oâ„¢, I turn my back for five minutes and you go very seventies and prog on me... an interesting direction... yes, it needs bass. You could even put a bass solo in at the end there, actually. But then bring the rest of the band back in with some Verve-style strings and go a bit mad.

What do you mean ruining? Enhancing, surely. I like the very bassy sound you have on the first guitar and how the trebly stuff comes in later, and I really like the chord progression - it's very folk (I've been learning some early Bob Dylan stuff lately and it has that same fresh unpredictability that you don't get so much in guitar music these days). Nice!

SHY by rickywaterman 3 years ago
Your voice is fine! You don't need to double track it. (One fun thing to do, though, is to double track some parts and then suddenly single track a random line here and there (with the volume level slightly boosted on it, of course. Or occasionally switch from double tracking the melody to harmonising - just a couple of other ideas to play with!)

One thing I would suggest is doubling up the guitar part and stereo panning it to give the instrumentation more width - at the moment you have a single guitarist surrounded by singers. The best way to do this, of course, is to play and record the same guitar part twice - small variations will keep the stereo correctly separated - but since you're out of action at the moment, here is a workaround: copy and paste the guitar part onto another track, and with the timeline zoomed in as far as it will go, drag one part a single "click" to the right. Hey presto - instant stereo separation, and your group of vocalists is surrounded by guitars (tweak panning as necessary!).

Hmmm - just reread your description and realised that you said this is a first draft, so maybe you already know and plan to do all this anyway! Ah well...

Live In Peace (i) by MakenaMonk 3 years ago

This is pretty damn fabulous. That's a very solid music track, nicely arranged, and yes - that horn! My only criticism on the production is that the vocal (which is a great vocal) sounds like it was recorded in a different room from the rest of the song - the reverb seems much too strong to me. Maybe you could cut the reverb down to bring the vocal forward in the mix and bring in some echo at key points in the song to add to the dub feeling of the whole record. I'll be downloading this song as it is, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an alternative mix!
Down At Jimmy Mak's by pdxflint 3 years ago
Nice groove! The bass is certainly strong, but sounds fine on my headphones (but then again, most things sound fine on headphones). My general monitoring technique is to play the song at medium volume and wander off into another room - that really tells you when one part is too loud or quiet, I think...

Perhaps the different solo instruments could be panned off to different sides more to separate off and spread out the sound a bit? There's also a very seventies-cop-show-theme keyboard sound that comes in after about 35 seconds which would definitely be better turned up, I think. Hope this is helpful!

Message In a Bottle (The Police cover) by Ahset 3 years ago
This sounds to me like mid-80s Depeche Mode (circa Black Celebration) doing this song - nice! I'm not too sure about the pitch correction on the vocals, though. I think it can be an interesting trick to highlight certain passages but there is a danger of overkill - it distracted me from the rest of the song here.

Walking on the moon by ponkey 3 years ago
Yeah, I have to admit that the bass on this sounds horrible enough that it meets my criteria for "however much I like your song overall, I never want to listen to it again." Thanks for your comment on the drum sticks, randolf - I made the amateurish mistake of keeping them at the same volume throughout, rather than dropping them down low after the intro part (which I think sounds okay).

Is the sound clipping/distorting on anyone's system? I was a bit worried about that. Mastering and compression works very differently on this version of GB than on my old one.
soundhound by Dirtys_wine 3 years ago
Great bass sound, and I like the way the guitars work with it. Honestly speaking I'm not a big fan of this vocal style - it seems prevalent in American rock, and I prefer a more straightforward delivery, but that's just my own musical prejudice. Works well overall.
What They Do Everyday by jobu 3 years ago
I agree with the above - this is a great song and I really like your performance. Yes, maybe a pop filter would help - you have a good warm sound to your voice though.

The only thing I noticed was some ambient "life beyond the window" noise - perhaps you need to do what the Beatles did during the recording of "A day in the life" (I read somewhere that they had to stop traffic in the streets surrounding Abbey Road to record the full sustain of that final chord) - you should try that:

"Oi! Shut up everyone! I'm making MUSIC here!"

...or alternatively just turn the mic down a bit more and get even closer. With that pop filter.

Nice song!

The vocal sounds like Billy Corgan has been round to your house recently. How close are you to the mic when you're singing? It sounds like you could afford to get closer and turn down the gain. Guitar sound is lovely, though. Charming song.
King of the Golden Hall (LOTR Cover) by elfdaughter 3 years ago
Impossible as it is to replace real strings with MIDI, I think you've done a fine job with this. On the other hand, it would be interesting to hear the instrumentation varied from the original so that this becomes not a copy, but an interpretation - but then again I guess I just have a thing about MIDI strings outside of early 80s pop.
