 Aside from the fact that this is a challenging tune, I think the reason a lot of people claim there isn't anything special about it is because they simply cant make music over it. I've worked with this tune since the mid 90's and only recently became comfortable enough with it to flow like you would over a blues. That, in my opinion, is the essence you want to reach...being able to feel comfortable moving between three keys and express yourself in a simliar way you would over a one key blues. This takes time, practice, and the will to open your ear enough to get it. What I like here is the ending of your first statement. And there's nothing wrong with incorporating coltrane patterns into the tune, that's simply idomatic and practically built into the tune fortunately. On the follwing statements...they sound good with the exception of the non chord tones on the strong beats. This is idomatic to bebop, and if you feel it sounds a bit off this is why. You want to target strong chord tones on strong beats. Now, thats not to say they are wrong notes, just possibly better choices that would strenthen the outside nature of that phrase, which is good. The third phrase has a nice sequence build, and I like what I'm hearing leading into the last phrase, and the last phrase itself. Definitely write out your solo, and learn it on your guitar. Pick out a few pet licks from your solo that you can always fall back on. Consider them keys to getting you back into the tune if you get a little off while improvising. All in all, I think it's an excellent start to getting inside these changes for you. The question I would ask you is, what have you learned from doing this exercise for yourself? | Thanks for the great wide open ears mre! You are right on all counts. The pedal steel were derived from loops, and I'm at the mercy of their recordist. I'm planning to have a live steel player replace, in addition to the bass and drums which were both created as placeholders. B major, is quite simply the best key this tune fits in for me, and believe me I've tried all the combinations. For it's range, it's the only key that will let me hit everything I need to hit with a sold tone. in as much as I can muster. Very, VERY much appreciate your clearly informed thoughts. Nobody here has EVER gone so far as to identify the key of a song I've posted, so I don't take your comments lightly at all and again, appreciate the gigantic ears! Thank you! sallan |
