Biography
My name is Scott Villard. I'm 38 years old. I have a B.A in Music, with a composition emphasis, and a J.D. (law degree). I live in Honolulu, HI with my wife and 2 cats, and am a licensed attorney and real estate agent. I used to sing in choirs, but haven't for about 12 years (I tend to be very picky about the quality of the ensemble as well as the quality of the repertoire--and I don't believe there is anything suitable in Honolulu). I've also been playing guitar and bass guitar (plus a little keyboard and drums) since I was about 16, and writing songs from about that time. I also picked up ukulele about a few years ago and enjoy that. I also write poetry from time to time, enjoy photography, and will try my hand at just about any creative pursuit if it's put in front of me. Put me in a room with musical instruments and I will play (or attempt to play) everything and be engrossed for hours.
I've never been in a band (except for a couple one-off amateur gigs). It's always hard to find people who are truly musically compatible, and I don't really have the time to dedicate to a band. It's fun to play with others, though, and I wish I could do it now and then, if I could find people to play with. Too much Jawaiian, Hawaiian, smooth R&B, and soft rock on these islands.
Ultimately, I think of myself as more of a composer/songwriter than a performer, in the sense that I don't feel the urge for the live spotlight, but I do feel the compelled to write music. I don't mind performing in choir, and I don't mind playing the parts in recordings of my music, but I don't yearn for the stage the way some do. I'm more focused on being the mind behind the content, the one whose ideas and expressions are being communicated to the audience.
I do take songwriting and composing very seriously. For me, it's a mix of careful analysis and intuitive flow. The two elements work together. I think of what a song might need, but then I listen to my inner voice and see what feels right. Then I reanalyze and make adjustments. It goes back and forth until I'm happy with the results.
I see music and my other creative pursuits as a way to understand myself, others, life, the meaning of it all, everything, and to communicate that back. I hope that others will relate and that there will be some meaningful, if indirect, connection. Even if that doesn't happen, I will still write and play.
