Biography
I was born a middle-class white child. Somewhere along the line, I picked up a guitar. Then I met Brian and Chuck. The rest is history. We never made it and all got day jobs.....
Tail End Charlie is a rock band that consists of a total of two people: Keith Varney (sparky_delong) and Charles Schwien (chuckesleeze). 'Don't Quit Your Day Job' was the debut CD from Tail End Charlie. The follow-up, titled 'Better Than a Poke in the Eye' is currently in post-production*.
The music can best be described as progressive rock. That term may date the members of the band, but it seems to be the most appropriate description. The music is rock-oriented, loaded with guitars and lots of harmonic melodies. The best way to get an idea is to listen to the music.
Chuck and Keith write all of the lyrics and music, while Keith gets to make all of the noises.
The guys used to have dreams of making it big some day, but somewhere along the line reality set in. And, the reality is that the music industry is really a large pile of poo. Commercial radio stations exist simply to be that - commercials. They are interested only in the ability to sell their clients' products. They are not interested in entertainment, nor are they interested in spreading news or opinion. They are interested in the almighty dollar (for better or worse).
So, at some point, the whole concept turned into a hobby. It's not the cheapest hobby, but it sure beats collecting cars. I guess you'd have to find the wisest sage to figure out why musicians continue to make music, knowing it may never be heard by more than a small handful of people. Must be some kind of sick compulsion.
Therefore, the goal of Tail End Charlie is to end up on some college radio station, probably somewhere in the middle of Saskatchewan (no offense to Saskatchewanians, eh). The rest of the 'for-profit' stations can stick it in their collective hineys.
*Editor's note: What that really means is that I haven't come up with the money to have it reproduced yet.
