| From the Ashes -01- Almost Sober by Surak | 2 years ago |
![]() Another cool track - I like the drum grooves and fat bass line. Sorry, but I have major issues with the production on this one, and the problem seems like it could have been an easy fix! It sounds like everything is left of the drum track, which takes away from the tightness of the track-- except the vocals, which sound more in time. That made the bass performance sound a bit sloppy- but it could mostly be the quantization. At the times, it sounds cool when everything is pushing the drums, but I wish everything at least aligned with the kick. Otherwise, the sounds were awesome - I love the vintage vibe. The riffs and your tone were evil. |
|
| From the Ashes -03- "Soul to Avoid" by Surak | 2 years ago |
![]() Cool music! I like the sludgey/grungy overall feel. Sorry, but not digging the vocals too much. Melodically, loved em - and I usually do with your songs. I had issues with the performance-- I thought you kept some weird takes, and they often sounded a bit tense - I'm curious how you recorded them. The production didn't do them too much justice either-- they sit back so far in the mix, and all I'm left with (all that cuts through the mix) is that head voice sound - so it feels like I'm struggling to even scrutinize them. The song is cool, but I thought it was a bit drowned out in reverb all around. The drums were fat (points there) but way loud, and it just felt like a bottom heavy mix. I also wish I could have heard more of the guitar solo over the drums! Anyway, your songs are tight - I appreciate the emotion behind this. |

![]() I say don't listen to anyone who's telling you that you need more or that the spaces in between notes aren't interesting. This is quite sufficient for an opening credits sequence, and I like how simple it is! You're quite right about it being a cool texture-- the timing/phrasing is what makes this interesting! A great example of "less is more"-- it seems that everyone else has hopped on the "more is more" bandwagon, which is all good and fine if you're trying for some epic prog rock song, which you're not. I understand what you were going for, and it's a good pocket melody. |

![]() Vocals were pretty cool and the song was pretty cool! You played off one main riff nicely - pretty old school. Didn't love all the transitions-- the breaks in action seem to kind of interrupt the energy for me, and the transition to the solo was a little strange for me too. I just wish the production were a little tighter, because I feel this could be pretty awesome-- the little breaks could totally change sonically! I'm definitely a fan of exploring different paces/energies in metal though, so props for the songwriting. |

| Dreams (Herrsolera Mix) by DaveM | 2 years ago |
| Rrrreeeemix! Wow, beautiful intro-- Solera's signature strings at their finest. This is basically a more tasteful version of Bon Jovi...WITH a backing orchestra. Great song-- the composition speaks for itself. Vocals are great- love the harmonies. Love the guitar work. Just a few things sonically. I think the guitars sound pretty good-- I just wish they were louder and fuller to match those strings! The strings cut out at the first verse, and the acoustic guitar is introduced in the back of the mix.... I think that first guitar entrance could be a much more powerful moment with the right sound. Also, what's going on with the drums (really, I'm curious)? Right now it almost sounds like they're all on the same track with the same really high ratio compression. The hi hats occasionally hit a certain threshold and cut through explosively-- sounds like they're being squashed. Basically the whole thing sounds very compressed and all the great instrumentation you have (other than the strings) sounds squashed. I beg you to remix this-- it has so much potential! Just a few specific suggestions: make sure all the drum sounds are on different tracks. EQ the kick and snare and hi hat and cymbals all separately. The snare is punchy, which is great-- lighten up the ratio maybe on the hi hats and mess with different compression thresholds? I feel like the hi hats should sit in their own bright place in the mix and cut through the mix. The kick and snare also sound a little uniform. The acoustic guitars are sick-- bring them up in the mix and don't be afraid to spread them a little sonically... I feel like the right production could make them sound a lot denser and bring out all the amazing nuances (it's hard to tell if it's really a 12 string). The vocals sound great, but should be relatively louder in my opinion. Overall, this is great and I love it. Everything is just too loud and not loud enough at the same time-- let your instruments breath... bring out those dynamics! |

| Harvester of Sorrow (Cover) by DJBallistix | 2 years ago |
![]() Good cover! Definitely sufficiently different from the original. The MIDI sounding backing track was a little karaoke-esque, but sometimes you gotta go with what you got, and I'm no stranger to that! Sweet vocal performance- especially when you held out that note just before the solo section. |
|
| Oh smile, Where are you going? by Rusticalia | 2 years ago |
![]() Feels like a train ride.. I dig the flow of your guitar work. You've got some cool melodies here-- I just wish there might have been more of a buildup.... one layer, then another, etc, to build up tension until the very end of the song so it's not too static. Anyway, not perfect, but a cool jam - good work! |

| THE CASTLE by Barretok | 2 years ago |
My favorite part: NNNOOOOOOOOOOnonoononononononooooooo!!!! Awesome breakdown. Loved the crying guitar solo. The flute instrument and hand drums sort of give the song a 60s psychedelic, pseudo-Japanese vibe... combined with some hard blues and Latino fury. This is the cross-cultural masterpiece Dewey Cox was going for in Walk Hard... all it needs is 1000 more didgeridoos! Great work barr ![]() |

| SHINE (GHOSTIZED REMIX) by GhostMusic | 2 years ago |
![]() Interesting beat-- the higher pitched vocal sample was pretty cool. I can tell you worked hard on this and it shows... I dig the way the vocals are mixed in. Your tone on this one actually reminds me of Eminem... but the vocals are original enough to hold their own! Very musical beat-- you've got a lot of instrumentation on this own, which could go either way. On one hand, I really like the soundscape you created-- it's very emotional, dramatic, and interesting enough that I had to play this through more than once to really analyze it and hear everything. I love that about good tracks-- you hear something new with each listen... and with this track, I was definitely hooked from the first few seconds to the 2nd listen. On the other hand, I wouldn't say the beat is too dense, however, I think this could go much harder. Honestly, I didn't love the kick or snare selections. Maybe it's the way they're EQ'ed / compressed, but they sound much cooler loud & with bass turned up than they do turned down (as with anything). The snare resonates a little too much for me, and I would've liked if the kick was a little punchier / sub-bassed and used more sparingly. Good track - I would love to hear a remix that makes the vocals really pop! |

![]() Nice drum loop-- they sound crisp... and pretty Billy Jean-esque! Nice vocals, nice breakdown, and overall, great job. The white noise and electricity sounds effects were pretty unexpected and very cool. I like how you brought back the verse with a smooth synth-- a really creative and unpredictable transition, and it works! My favorite part is the chorus (more instrumentation / synths, which I thought made the beat most interesting). |

Thanks for all the comments so far guys. Dan, thanks for your thoughts on guitar tone-- I know you've been quite critical of my digital effects pedal for After You Are Gone ... taking that into consideration I tested practically every amp model in Logic and I still wasn't 100% sure on the tone, although I think I'll go from here and mess with the EQ and compression...maybe stereo spread-- that's a new tool for me, and if anyone has thoughts, please let me know (still, not bad considering the amp is digital, no?) Once this song is all rerecorded and edited and mixed properly, guitars should be much tighter and without that residual amp fuzz you pointed out Dan-- good catch ... I'm somewhat surprised the composition wasn't too outrageous or confusing (or maybe it is and those people retreated within the first 15 seconds)-- I suppose this is my way of "road testing" the flow of the track, as I'm used to it already. I'll be the first to testify that this progressive style of songwriting absolutely does not work with hip hop beats! So I tried it out on some metal....grrr... I wasn't sure whether or not to add more or to let the song end roughly where it does now-- after some deliberation, I think I'll save any additional material for other tracks and cheat...err...produce my way to a better intro and ending. Nothin' like some good fade ins and fade outs. Thanks again for your thoughts - definitely helps to get more ears on a track in the works. |

![]() Hey Royall, this is a solid loop track! I like the instrumental-- not sure which pianos are looped and which are played, but the song sounded good regardless. As for your Tascam, if you're having the same problem I had, you might need to plug it in through a powered USB hub. What model do you have? I called Tascam about the issue, and it turns out not all USBs are equal (macs in particular are not always powered). |

![]() As a good friend and great musician once put it, opera music was once degraded and thrown aside like trash. (Perhaps not all of it, but there are more than enough examples in history where riots would begin during Classical performances). Maybe growling is the new opera vocal. I really dig this song-- for its rawness and vocal variation. I like how it switches between melodic to amelodic. I didn't catch all the lyrics, but I get the idea, which is most important. This is a raw recording, which I get-- so I won't get into the production too much. The track has its own rhythm, which is cool! Good work - I feel ya. |

| "SIRIUS" by fatchance | 2 years ago |
| Hey fatchance... brilliant performances across the board - this is a high energy, tight track! I actually didn't love the mix to be honest-- my initial impression is that the synth instruments are way up front in the mix. Compare the guitar solo and synth solo for instance. Sometimes the bass and drums also drop out when the other instruments crowd the mix-- with a sub woofer, it's not bad, but when I turn down my sub, all that sub-bass pressure is gone & the kick and bass just don't hit that sweet spot for me. Anyway, the most glaring thing for me is the synth, but everything else is a little more subtle for me -- hope my perspective helps! Overall, the performance & track are great -- the production is good. Thanks for posting- good work! | |
| The Mask Of Shiva by Arbori | 2 years ago |
![]() Cool! I like the feel of this one-- very trippy & it reminds me of goa trance. I think the kick drum might have been loud for this mix -- you probably intended it to be the loudest, but I think it'd cut through the mix just fine if you turned it down a few dBs. It's louder than the vocals in the background too, which I'd be careful about. Mixing issues aside, this is sweet! |
