| Thank you for the lovely comments. And Bam, I am absolutely thrilled to hear that it made it into your car! It's true that it's not radically different. There are some on-beat/off-beat differences as compared to the original, but this particular effort was really more of a remaster than a remix. I'd tell you more but I'd have to kill you, so let's just leave it at that. ![]() |

| Homecoming (Hedfone Dancer Mix) by limabean777 | 3 years ago |
| My first impressions: • There's a compressor (probably a limiter, actually) that is pretty distracting as soon as the synth pad comes in. • I doesn't feel like there is anything out of place, particularly, but it seems to be missing something. Or, maybe it's supposed to be more of a texture than a complete song? • The ending is rather abrupt. This may just be GarageBand mechanics, though. A little trick for you -- add a software instrument track that has one or two measures of nothing at the end of the song. All you have to do is record it (even if you hit one note on the keyboard), then delete all of the content in the clip editor and resize it to fit your needs. This will give any echo/reverb effects time to decay. Keep on creating! |

| There are so many things to like about this. A non-inclusive list includes the overall concept, the guitar work all around, the lyrics, the vocals, the way the whole thing is assembled and flows. The feelings and memories this evokes are unusually strong. Very, very well done. It's gonna get a bunch more listens for sure (and that's saying something, since "it's not my usual thing" ). |

![]() Some of these songs are 5-star performance, some are not. Great renditions of "White Wedding" and "Hungry Like The Wolf", particularly -- and "Modern Love" and "Our House" are quite good too. On the other hand, "Pour Some Sugar On Me" needed a help; if that was all I was listening to, it'd be hard to give it a "meh" rating. All in all this is quite good and brings back some fun memories. Thanks for sharing! |

| a minor cause for... alarm? (iRratIoNaliTY miX) by srey0123 | 3 years ago |
| Glad you liked it, ddball! In this song the difference is essentially more fine-grained control due to having more inserts available. In GB there's always the question of which plug-ins to use; I feel like I've been in a straightjacket all of this time now that I've been playing with Logic. (argh. I blame you for this, offbalance!) I was also able to leverage automation on several tracks (it's a lot simpler to make changes in LE than GB 1.1 at least). This includes automation on both track levels and delay/reverb mix levels. I had a lot of fun tinkering with this. My other quick-and-dirty GB to Logic song taught me a couple of things, though, so I am likely to come back to this and see what I can do with it, at some point. |
|
| Retrocaptive (Droppabomb Remix) by srey0123 | 3 years ago |
| The difference between the GarageBand version and the Logic Express version is confined to a couple of things. First, the insert chain on the output track has replaced the AUMultiband compressor and AUPeakLimiter for Logic's native Limiter and Preset Multipressor plug-ins. Something that I wasn't able to do in GarageBand is that I've now got EQ between the limiter and the multipressor to help keep the compressor from getting too "punchy". I was surprised that the biggest different in sound, by far, comes from the multipressor; the EQ hardly makes a difference, at least audibly speaking. There's still an AUPeakLimiter at the end of the insert chain but this was simply to catch a couple of spots where the output peaked at about 0.3 dB. It was a good compromise, I think... Thanks for the comments! |

![]() Particularly, I found this lacking in a couple of places: 1) The timing is slightly off in some places, and grossly so in others. Singing this with some (closed-back) headphones on with at least a minimal previously recorded accompaniment track should help. It's also not necessary to record it all in one "take" -- you can create a new vocal track, back up a bit in the song, hit the record button, and jump back in at the right time. (You'll want to start at the beginning of a line, or perhaps the beginning of a verse, to be most effective.) 2) The vocal track is a little hot, i.e. somewhat distorted. I don't know if this is due to the mic itself (but you have an SM-58, right?) but it's more likely in the mix. I'd pull the mic track back a bit and, if you're not already using it, add some compression to level out the vocals and bring them forward. There's a bunch of information on Shure's web site that can help. Both of these things are fixable. Clever editing and some re-engineering could possibly improve this a great deal without even having to record it again. Props for persistence. Also, you clearly do have ability, whether or not you are realizing your potential. |

| jayman and MrsE - thanks, I'm very glad you like it. Bampot - Euro-Pop, huh? I hadn't really thought of it that way but I can definitely see where you're coming from. Thank you all for rating this! I'm already hard at work on improving it before the Logic Express trial period runs out. Maybe I can find a way to get one more star from Bampot. (Seriously, I'm totally cool with less than 5 stars. It tells me where I can do better.) |

![]() What a fun ride! And, the production quality is top notch. There are a couple of spots where piano and/or synth tracks were hitting on-beat (in what I guess I'd call the bridge). This is rather in contrast to the syncopated main theme. Maybe it's just me, but that was a little distracting. |

![]() I'm not sure I get the synth horns in the second half of the song... yes, I know, maybe they're not there for me to "get", but I couldn't shake myself loose from that thought. ![]() Lloyd, this track is head and shoulders above the original version, even if I can't rate it all that much higher. I love how you've pushed that bass back a bit without compromising it. Along with giving the drums/percussion a little extra juice, this really changes the feel of the piece dramatically. Very nice work! Perhaps you should revisit it in a year or so. ![]() |

| doofy - exactly! HP - thanks for your thoughtful review. I had a lot of fun with this one, learning a lot of little tricks, e.g. how to keep that Virus arp synth from being way-too-obviously a loop. I'm really pleased you had fun with it, because after all, that's my goal! ![]() |

| Stay Forever by Hunksten Proudfoot | 5 years ago |
![]() Man, I thought I was going to get to be the first one to comment on that bass synth... really kicks you in the shorts. I love it. Nice punch without overdoing it. I'm also a fan of the bleepy-bloopy things that davajonah noted. The overall level on this track is considerably lower than others you've done. Not sure if you were running into peaks due to the bass and were forced to compensate, or what, because the low end is definitely there on the iTunes meters. Killer stuff. I suppose I'll go into withdrawals while you're gone... at least I have these bits of you on my iPod. ![]() Hope your holiday will be exactly what you need it to be. |

![]() Hunksten, this is just freakin' brilliant. I am awed. You've packaged pure exuberance, somehow.I've listened to this nearly two dozen times -- more than I usually do before I rate -- and I keep finding new layers and perspectives. There is intriguing subtleness balanced by the throb of raw energy. There's an unmistakable flow from beginning to end. Even the bits that first struck me as out of place remind me that the unexpected should be expected, even embraced, because time marches on regardless. Note on the postproduction work -- you've really outdone yourself. I love how you've placed tracks in the sound field, some over here, some over there, some up front, some filling my head. The mix is clean and balanced, which you've always been quite good at, but I must say you've definitely improved in this area. I'm going to make one suggestion. I'm not sure that it would make the track better, so take it as you wish... the beat very nearly completes a perfect circle. There is something really quiet at the very end of the track. If that is intentional, perhaps you can add the same thing to the beginning of the track...? Some care would have to be taken to keep the beat aligned, but something in me just says "whoa, that would just blow my mind." |
