Biography
I got my first guitar when I was eight, and within 6 minutes, and out of curiousity rather than wild playing I had broken a string.
When the TV cameras visited our school when I was eleven the teacher suggested that I mime rather then sing. Songs of praise indeed.
When at age 23 I performed my first solo gig in a Glasgow club. I felt real ****ty after it. Three days later a mate, Gordon said you're not still crucifying yourself about that are you ? I was. I was much lighter after that. Less self important, but still scared of being crap...I don't think I reached the point of being afraid of success.
At 27 I auditioned some songs at the BBC, Queen Margaret Drive, The producer came down..there was a bit of a Buzz. He liked the stuff. He was sacked the next week. Seriously it's true. He later phoned me and we used one of the songs for a demo video he was doing.
At 29 I recorded 4 songs at CA VA in Glasgow and took them down to London. I was willingly seduced by an older woman who could only make love when she had been drinking...the guilt. At Rough Trade the A and R man said 'nice voice' and then played me Louden Wainright 111. As Sam said it was back to square one.
Formed a variety of Bands such as Paper Tiger, Uspeakable Acts, Bamboozle. Played the Third Eye Centre, Hallibees and various folk clubs.
At 34 I was a freelance arts worker and was MD for a variety of community shows. Did MD for the Arches. All the time Andy kept on mentioning that he would have used Viv Stanshill if he had been a bit more stable.
At 35 I co-produced and released my self funded cassette. Filling in the Cracks at Sonic studios in Leith. It didn't bother me a Glasgow Lad that I was recording in Edinburgh. The songs got airplay on Iain Anderson and a good review in Folk Roots. I went to USofA and formed a band, played some gigs and got married.
I've been doing the same job now for 18 years and have 2 teenage daughters. My current band is davesnewbike. We have 12 songs and have recorded 3 for a promo CD. In October 2008 I co-wrote a bloody Christmas Song with three pals and Chris Difford. It became a ONE SHOW flop. The creative adventure continues.
