![]() I think it's a really nicely done instrumental new age groove. In the beginning it reminded me of a song I had done that has a similar feel, but it went in a totally different direction. It would make a nice little interlude in a TV show or a movie, cinematic, in other words. Very nice tidy guitar playing, not exactly ear-shattering, but very well done and soothing. |

| I have always liked this song, and I think I actually like this version even better than the surf version. Maybe the strings make the prospect of hair-cutting seem even more tragic. And I love the way your daughter says "Gum-gum-gum" Good job! | |

| The Hammond B3 is the GB2 organ. The sustain pedal turns on the Leslie, and there's a ramp up and a ramp down, so it's pretty realistic. I have two tracks, one Jazz Organ and the other Gospel Organ and when you blend the two it's like you adjusting the drawbars. Pretty neat, eh? I'm glad you like the song. I hope it can bring people up, though it's sort of a heavy message type thing... |

| Hey Thanks guys! I did this song for a competition so I pulled out all the stops productionwise. I think it's pretty pumped. All done in GB, of course. guitars all played through my amp, bass going direct, keyboard direct. Some of the strings in the bridge are played samples via my keyboard and there are some orchestra loops blended in.I maxed out my RAM on this one, and now I can't even play the GB file for more than a few seconds at a time. Mixing it was a real challenge! | |

![]() I really love this song, and your vocal is really nice. I can't say I'm crazy about some of the backing sounds, as it sort of reminds me of an ice-rink organ at times, but it's a decent performance, and sentimentally I have to give you thumbs up for choosing such a great song to cover. |

| I didn't actually stub my toe. That's just what this song reminded me of, that sort of walking-in-your-sleep thing. A stumble through the unconcious. Some pretty, accidental things happening here, but what the hey, warts and all, there-ya-go, that's me! | |

| Comes from growing up on the US/Canada border, I guess. I probably was subjected to more Canadian media than US media as a child. Bruce Cockburn was probably one of the main influences on my songwriting for a long time, though this particular song was more inspired by the Waterboys when I wrote it, which was a while back. I was playing in a Waterboys type group then, and that's when I got nicknamed toots. It's because I sometimes talk like a relic from the '50s. Too many old movies, I guess. Oh, and thanks for listening and rating. Sorry for being unsettled about the relativity concept here. This song's probably not about that at all. he he he... |

![]() Y'know, I thought it was b.vocals too and then only later realized it was woo-ooo keyboard sounds after a while. Sorta nice. I like it. Reminds me of the Feelies or something I don't know what exactly. I like the soft distortion from the cheap crappy guitar. Simple. This falls into the pleasant instrumental camp. Ending comes around not very artfully. Lack of artiness is not necessarily a bad thing, though sometimes it looks like laziness. |

| I don't have a lot of gear, just a UB802 Behringer mixer, the basic $60 one. I plug that into a US-122 preamp. One thing I do is I ignore the red zone of the master meter (in the lower right corner of the GB screen) because it will make your recording sound too quiet when you play them in iTunes if you mix it so it stays out of the red. Apple seems to be playing it a bit too safe in there levels there, but because it is digital you can push the levels higher than you think and it shouldn't distort. If it does it should be obvious when you listen to it. I also use the Overdrive effect (the Boost Preset)in GB to pump up most mic'ed tracks. | |

| daft folk by toots | 4 years ago |
| Thanks for listening. I use a Rode NT1000 mic and place it just towards the treble side of the strings just on the neck side of the soundhole. I have a 30-year old Guild G37 acoustic which is a maple-body guitar, and has a tendency to be somewhat mid-rangey. This mic is excellent, probably the best 199 I ever spent on sound equipment (it was a demo model). I use it for pretty much everything. | |

| Thanks! Warning! guitar geekspeak to follow: The guitar is played through a Fulldrive 2 and a Boss SD-1 into my Peavey Delta Blues amp and mic'ed. The volume was sort of down on the amp, and all the overdrive was from the pedals. The intro guitar is a chunk of the ending reversed in Sound Studio. There's only one track of guitar, but it's detuned and capoed up on the 3rd fret. There was another guitar track but I lost it somewhere along the way. | |

![]() Flutes eh? cool... I'd like to hear this again. The overall veneer of phasing makes this really different from the typical jazz samba feel. I don't know if some of the horn loops are necessary in the last 3rd as they are sorta GB loop-obvious, and don't really add a lot as they are. Maybe I've been working in GB loop-land too long though. Don't listen to me..., this is cool... |

![]() My disclaimer: I am a member of the Blacklily admiration society. But there's reasons for that. Like this. This is very cool. Great vocal, guitar is great, lyrics are great. Intentionally lo-fi might be an excuse, but it seems to work. There is still some potential for development, but restraint is probably wise here, as it leads to a very tender song. |

![]() This is really nice. I think everything works really well together. I beg to differ about the guitar/vocal mix, I think it's just right. It sounds like a Harry Nillson type of Pop song to me. The Eels song in Shrek is "My Beloved Monster" which has more weird sounds in it, and I don't think it sounds that much like this except that it's also got a sort of tender quality to the vocal. Come to think of it, maybe the weird sounds would enhance a sort of straightforward song like this. Obviously I like your style too. |

| Interesting...the original lead vocal track is unchanged. The EQ is only on jobu's gargoyle track. Just shows how important context is. I may go into the mix and add a bit more of the megaphone effect to the vocal, as you might be right. Right now I'm a bit oversaturated with this.. how easy it is to lose perspective. Thanks for listening and for your review! | |
| my old school/I want one too by BlackLily | 4 years ago |
![]() this is quite pleasant. I noticed you changed the name. this name is really much better. Interesting dense mix. it doesn't have much melodic focus, but a lot of vocal interplay compensates for that. I've tried to do a couple things like this, so I'm sort of partial to it. I want one toooo! |

| Fades Away by toots | 4 years ago |
| in the words of William Blake's "Songs of Innocence and Experience: "Well we'll go & play till the light fades away." It's a very old idea... It should have faded out way before it got too repetitious, but I like the little crashing thing I worked out for the end and didn't want to nix it. John and I used to play in a band with Nathan and he had a song called Fade Away too. But I didn't write the words, Gray did. As for the vocals, what do you want for first takes? I didn't use any processing on the vocals to cover anything up, which is something I think people do too much. All the basic tracks were done in about 2 hours including writing the song. The wall of guitars took about half a day. |

| Last Night: A Tribute to Little Walter by Daddio | 4 years ago |
![]() I think the vocal is great enough to hear a little better. The harmonica sounds like it might be recorded with a different microphone. Why not use the same sound for the vocal? that harmonica is certainly pretty great. The guitar is a little stiff, maybe if it was dirtied up a little bit with the same effects you have on the harmonica it would blend in more. All in all quite enjoyable. |

![]() This is one peppy tune. But I would like to hear the vocals better just slightly as the words are really clever. I like the ending, and could have heard a breakdown like that somewhere in the middle of the tune, for variety's sake. |

| 61 Highway: Solo Slide Guitar by Daddio | 4 years ago |
![]() I just really like this kind of thing. I know it's not for everybody, but I really dig it. I think the effects on the recording are a little out of character for the genre, but so what, as boriss put it. Reminds me of Skip James. Have you heard Tangle Eye? They take Alan Lomax recordings and put loops with them, could be an interesting idea for a fusion. Or the R.L Burnside stuff with Jon Spencer? |

| I Wanna Be On Fire (vocals) by SlimGirlFat | 4 years ago |
![]() This is really good, as others have pointed out. I like the contrast between the double tracked parts and the solo vocal part. I would have liked an even greater portion of the vocals un-doubled, as you have good pure vocal talent, but this is a good direction. Other than the drums, something about the loops doesn't work 100%, but you probably know that. This would be greatly helped by using real jazz players instead of loops, but they are hard to get to show up for the gig sometimes. Reminds me of Slaphappy with Dagmar Krause. |

![]() I actually like the drunk version better, the pureness of it. I know your a phan of phasing, but it's the tremolo that sort of detracts from this one. I'm a fan of tremelo, but I think the speed of this particular tremolo might be too fast for the meditative feel of the music. I love the melody though. Reminds me of Satie or something. btw, no problem playing this. |

| There's an intriguing sort of sonar-type of sound that seems to fit in well with your concept. But I guess I shouldn't rate this as I'm not sure I listened to the whole thing but for some reason this only played about halfway through after I downloaded this to iTunes. An upload/download problem? Weird. I was listening to it waiting for it to develop into something and at 2:36 in, it just quit and went to the next song in the player. Which was total avulvication revisted. I'll try again later when I get on my eMac and off this Windows XP machine. | |
| Silence by toots | 4 years ago |
| The original vocal track was recorded for something totally different, and Gray did sort of a bad engineering job on it. I liked the words though and the vocal melody, so I snipped it out and did this looping job around it, with the idea that at some point I would re-record Gray's vocal. We just haven't had a chance to do that yet because he's busy with college, but I think once we do, it should solve a lot of problems. As it is, this song is sort of a rough sketch of what it'll be someday. Thanks for the input, because it confirms what I was thinking. | |

![]() Yeah, this is really different. I love its imperfections. And it is a really pretty melody. This is real music. I guess this type of production may stand in the way of getting a lot of people to really appreciate it fully, so maybe it is ripe for re-doing, but I liked it. I listened to it a bunch of times before commenting, because it's hard for me to figure these things out sometimes. |

![]() Finally it's my turn. Nice job. I really liked the phasing, maybe could have been a bit slower phase, but it's fine the way it is. I like the sucky lead guitar, but my favorite part is the ride cymbal. Don't know if it needs bass, I don't really miss it. Great lyrics, radical vocals. A little repetitive. |

| Pleasant Day by toots | 4 years ago |
| I actually worked on this a lot, editing the vocal down quite a bit, and layering it in a way to make it very musical. The slight cacaphonies are very intentional. The vocal was actually recorded on a Boss BR-532 4-track recorder and then brought into Garageband. It's a long story. thanks for listening! |

| Jammin' with Blair by toots | 4 years ago |
| What happened here is that there's two different drum loops overlaid on top of each other and the drums got pretty funky in a not so good way because of that in parts. I felt it was a little off-kilter and the whole thing turned into a train wreck, but it's like seeing a crash on the highway, I can't stop looking...I didn't take it too seriously and was going for an innocent "Blue Jay Way" sort of instrumental. | |

![]() Sverker sorta nailed it, but I still want to chime in. It's really, really good. The creaking sound is a bit loud, could be used a little more judiciously. Otherwise there's a real conversational quality to the vocal that is a little Willy N.-like. It's very intimate, and probably just the right level to get this message across. |
|
| Who they foolin' by jibes | 4 years ago |
![]() This is another great song. I'd agree about the Little Feat feel, sort of like a "Lafayette Railroad" groove on this. I don't think it's too slow at all. The vocals are a little too loud, the bass sound is a little floppy, and it could maybe benefit from a bridge or a more distintive solo section. None of this makes it hard to listen to though, as it's really quite pleasant. |

| Thanks for your comments! Some of the words I notice now are less than clear, but what was supposed to be my guide lead vocal to be replaced never got replaced because I wanted to keep it fresh, and avoid overdoing it. ![]() I felt I should rate this because I had a slightly differnt perspective on this tune. I liked the abrupt ending, but I thought the guitar was too quiet. The vocal is very nice, but maybe more movement, in other words more variation or dynamics, in the arrangement would be good. I'd agree that it's over all very good. |

| This is great! A real song! I dig your politics. I hope that this song works to "take John Kerry all the way". As a recording, I would bring the reverb down. Other than that, I don't think it needs much. Maybe, just maybe,it could use more variation in the rhyme scheme, but it certainly gets the point across. You've got a great style. |

| It sounds pretty musical and interesting and like you put a lot of work into it in arranging all those loops. It'd be interesting to see this performed live by an orchestra, but I like the way it sounds. | Thanks...I'm not exactly a big Warren Zevon fan either, though on closer listen I have come to really appreciate a lot of what he produced throughout his much too short life. This song seemed rather atypical, and also open to a looser interpretation, and I wanted to expand the form of it into a more impressionistic territory. With Garageband it's a lot more possible through the use of loops and software instruments, so it was fun to track this tune, | |

Isn't it weird how when you're at a big concert and there's a quiet soul-baring song there's cheering all the way through? Anyway, this is a total success in my book... |
