| Thnx, amigos. I start with the groove, always with the groove, something I learned when I used to hang around Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia back in the day. Good beat. Easy dance to. Start there. |

| I used one of the three chorus effects I have on the piano -- either the built in GB effect, or free .AU plugin either Model or MonstaChorus, I don't recall. Model is one of the greatest freebies out there! I might also have run the acoustic piano through the American Clean amp simulator. I like to think of it as a contrast of styles rather than a "clash," but that's just me! ![]() |

![]() Very soulful playing -- I hear more of Jimmy Page than Sabbath. Not bad either way! |

| Re panning: Theoretically, say, I'd like to have a guitar on the left, say, and the reverb coming from the right. Can't do that with GB3. Thanks for the pointer to setups! ![]() |

| Comments here have led me to realize my mixing/monitoring setup is a lot worse than I thought. My stereo is busted, so I've been mixing on high-end Sennheiser headphones (HD25SP) and doublechecking the results on the PowerBook speakers. I understand about putting everyone in the same room. I wish I had more control -- separate control of echo sends and returns, including pan position. It's a poor craftsmen who blames his tools but I need to get my stereo hifi act together before I post more stuff. I mean I'm not new to being behind a board but I don't even have decent %@#$%#$^%#$# monitors. ACK. And more and more I'm thinking I need to upgrade to Express at least, but $300 for hobby software, well I dunno. The more I do this the more I hear. I go back and listen to some old mixes and want to redo everything. |

| Some folks have asked me what software I used to get the Macintalk voice into the tune. First of all, I am using a (new to me) Apple refurb 17" G4 1.67 MHz PowerBook, Tiger, and GarageBand3. I have every JamPack, some third party loops I bought, every sample/demo loop ever released, and stuff I've converted myself using the Apple Loop Utility. Anyhow, most Mac applications can talk, but you need to run a shell script (it's called 'say') to record the output, or some third-party utils. I personally used two shareware utils to do this: Speech Queue, which opens up a little window specfiically to enter text to speech (TTS) and which gives you control over speech parameters like speed, pitch, inflection, etc. I record the output using Audio Hijack Pro - top of the line app from Rogue Amoeba but they have free and cheaper versions, too. So I enter the text into Speech Queue, pick Vicki (the highest quality Mactntalk TTS voice) to say it, and then massage the spelling and punctuation to get the inflections as close as possible. In this tune, which contains mostly foreign words that you couldn't say if there were an "English only" law in the USA, I had to work hard on getting the American-accented Vicki to say "lingerie" and "ingles" correctly. The spelling I came up with, for the lyrics, finally, was [english only], no tortilla, macaroni, a la carte. [english only.] mamma meeya, mani shehvitz, mannigott. [english only], cosa nostra, prairie, bayou, fiancee. [solo eenglais, mee amigo.] rio gronday, lon gerray. Anyhow, Vicki said it, Audio Hijack Pro recorded it, and I dragged and dropped the AIFF file into GB. I used the Vocal Transformer filter to give Vicki a gender transformation, and we were good to go. Oh -- I hand edited the track (control-t) -- removed silences -- and pieced it together to fit the groove. Sorta. Glad you liked! |

![]() There is a hit tune in here somewhere. "Power for the people..." is the lyrical and musical hook. A little rearranging and cleaning up and you're on the way! |
