music is an art that is absolute and true
it cannot lie to its audience
it is pure, universal and around us, all the time.
conveying that universal truth with the music and sound that i create is why i make music.
all my life i've been surrounded by, wrapped up in, and involved with music. as a child, i grew up in a large family and being the youngest of 9, my older brothers and sisters were always listening to the music of the late 70's and early 80's. my mother would listen to an easy listening radio station when she would clean the house and the smell of pledge always brings to mind the sounds of the carpenters, dionne warwick, the 5th dimension, neil diamond and the like. since then i would fall in love with songs i heard on the radio and i would analyze the sounds, the melody, the harmony, memorize every note and lyric.
in school, i pushed my way into music class with no prior experience or knowledge of how to read, let alone write music. my mother's father who i never met was a violin player and i do remember wanting to play the violin in 4th grade and have just recently purchased a violin to fulfill that childhood wish. one of my closest friends in 4th grade who still is to this day was the most talented drummer our school had ever seen. she was obsessed with karen carpenter as a child and she and her brother (who has perfect pitch) were gifted in music. i wanted to play in the band with her, so i crashed band class and basically told our music teacher that i'd learn to play any instrument. the cymbals were my first. then eventually i moved onto other auxiliary percussion instruments like the bass drum, the snare, timpani, xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, tubular bells, vibraphone and in my last year of school played in an orchestra which was heaven...
i became fixed on getting into that world of playing complex classical music and reading those pages of unintelligible alien writing which is notation.
presently with computer technology at all of our fingertips and ease and fluidity of musical composition software, how could i not dive right back into the never ending world of music and its creation. now i can afford to have thousands of instruments that sound like the real thing. i not only have a violin real and CG, i have an entire orchestra. thank you apple.
all of the music that i've created so far i've done on a 17" apple powerbook g4, with 2gb of memory and a 1.33 ghz powerpc processor, a m-audio radium64 controller, a micro korg synthesizer/vocoder, m-audio firewire recording interface, an m-audio icontrol and one shure microphone. presently, i have just upgrade to a macpro 2x quad-core intel xeon 2.8 ghz and currently i am working on projects for winter 2009.
