@lummie.... If I recorded on my iPad, I would definitely need to transfer the audio file back to my iMac for production work in Logic Pro..... I guess my greatest concern is the quality of the recording.... I'm not the most "techie" person, but I'm pretty happy with the quality I get on my old fashion 8-track Tascam... and also the recordings I get when I record directly into Logic (with an audio interface between the mic/guitar and the iMac).... So, would my recordings on an iPad be just as clean?
Anyways, thanks so much for the input! This is good stuff... |

The quality of recordings made with the iPad are dependent upon what you are using to record them (i.e., the microphone).
However, most applications use 44.1k (CD quality) stereo samples and loops.
Using the built-in microphone works fairly well. Using the Camera-kit, with a USB microphone, or audio device with a mic connected, works extremely well. The audio quality, in some applications, can be changed to various sample rates. Most applications, however, will use 44.1k. |

Apple's information on GarageBand on the iPad. Really looks great! Lots of on board instruments that utilize the iPad's touch sensitivity really well ... even the harder you tap on the drums has an effect. I've got an iPad (though not GB yet) and touch features are impressively used by most all the app makers, especially for creative applications.
Here's another article with a video about GarageBand on an iPad.
Here's one 3rd party interface device through which a guitar (or similar instrument) can be plugged into the iPad. And another way instruments can be plugged into an iPad. These work with iPhones, too.
A few weeks ago, I saw another interface for the iPad that was $25ish, though I've not been able to find it again. Dang it!
I've been looking to find at what bit-rate recording can be done and haven't found that info yet. Aside from the bit-rate (whether 16 or 24) I would imagine the quality of recording is going to be the same as any other digital device such as your laptop or desktop computer. Just as with any recording device (as lummie says, too), mics, instruments, etc, used will be some of the main deciding factors of input quality.
A side note: iMovie is on iPad, too |

No!!!! GarageBand itself is a step below logic processing and sampling imo, which is based on using the same interface in Logic, GB and Protools and getting an inferior sound from GB. I personally only see the ipad at this point including ipad2 more of getting ideas and possible bringing over midi info and some instruments I definitely wouldn't trust vocals yet, or a full fledge session, in the picture of a ipad gb session I don't see loops or 3rd party plug ins, so I'm not sure the version of GB that will be in there, but it did look like there is a mixer
Having said all of that Apogee does make some of the better sounding interfaces and I believe they make the guitar interface being used in the GB video. So at some point it could be possible that the sound would be atleast comparable to any GB that could even be true of the ipad2 now but I don't know... For vocals your quality will come from the pre amps and converters as long as the program is able to sample at the same quality. Now wouldn't it be cool if they had a $5 Logic studio app I'd buy it just for that lol.
And "clean" may need to be clarified a little more because you can get a clean (clear) sound with inferior equipment but the quality may still be inferior.
(Edit to earlier post about GB bit rate) I couldn't find the bit rate either on the new iPad2. It would seem a shame for it to have hdmi cable and 1080p and not be 24 bit audio. |

I'll post something, using the iPad, and both the internal and an external microphone, at some point so that we can ease some of these concerns that are being voiced. |

I guarantee everyone here... very soon, some kid or young band will record a hit song on their iPad using GarageBand and will blow this whole market to the moon. |

I've read a report that sharing files from Garageband on iPad to Garageband on the Mac isn't quite working right yet. Mac garageband reports it needs a newer version to read the file, so I suspect an update is coming soon to Mac GB. Keeping watch for it...
I look forward to getting an iPad 2 and using Garageband on it. There are other recording and mixing apps, too, but this one gets you in the door at just $4.99 and is (or will be) compatible with what I use on my Mac, so... |

I saw that iODock before, then forgot about it, but it still looks like a great product... I think it delivers next month. |
