Hi I have heard song collaborations in the music channel and I was wondering how to go about doing something along those lines. I am happy with my song that I have composed in garageband. But I would like to use a backing/duet vocal. I have a singer that I would like to use. Apart from getting that person into a recording studio in my home town, how can I get that person to record the vocal part when they live a distance away? Any advice, technical or otherwise greatly appreciated. Thanks. Note: I am a complete newbie to this. So far I am loving it! |

You can send them a MP3 of your music and then let them record the vocals on a separate MP3 and send them to you to mix. If you work with some of the more knowledgeable vocalists they can mix. If you have a particular melody in mind, sing it yourself so they know what you want or depending on who you work with, just send them the notes and timing. It's a bit different with everyone. There are simple vocal programs like audacity and more complicated ones. Let the vocalist know what you'd prefer to use. Then let the magic begin. People here colab from all parts of the world using methods like that. If you want more technical information I feel sure someone with more knowledge in that area will answer your post soon. |

Did you? I didn't notice. If that's the worst offense you commit, you're on your way to a very good experience here. |

welcome to icomps Clock I live in New Zealand yet collaborate with folks in USA, UK, Denmark, Canada, Australia etc. As Luna has explained you just have to send someone a mp3 of the track you wish to collab on.
if you have already done a rough mix of voice and music this can assist some of us in knowing what you want done where. They will then record their dry vocals on a seperate track so as you can go back to your daw and drop into the mix, adjust the balance etc |

Hi...welcome to iComps. I am one of the regular collaborators on this site (and others too). My advice to you is: do not be offended, disheartened, cajoled, etc. You need to have an open mind. It's like making love over the net! Some collaborators may not like what you did; and I'm someone who is quite direct when something doesn't seem right to me...and therefore offer suggestions.
I just posted a song called Walk Across The River which is the result of a failed collaboration. So, not all collabs are successful. But do not get disheartened!
There are many skillful experts who know software and hardware better than this old goat! I find them most helpful, and even this old goat learned a thing or two.
Welcome! And happy times! Just make sure you have less sensitive skins.
