I've had Logic 7 for ages, but have rarely used it. I think one of the problems I have with it is that, whereas in Garageband I can easily see a list of all my instruments, I don't know how to do this in Logic - I think it just shows me one instrument at a time then I have to cycle through the interface and it pops in the next instrument. I can't recall seeing a big list of instruments - is this possible?

i cant remember how it was in logic 7 but try creating a track first (soft instrument), highlight that & there should be a button (pull down menu) on the top right corner of the DAW window. click that & another window should pop out with some tabs, click "library", that should show you the instruments available for your soft synth track.

Instrument selection is made at the top of each track's channel strip.

As becwil pointed out, you can click-hold the marked channel strip setting to bring up an "instrument. That button will give you a list of available instrument (channel strip) settings, organized by type. (You can also save your own).

If you look further down the strip in the screeenshot, you will see a button labeled "ESX24." This is actually the "instrument" being played in the channel.

Click the "ESX 24" to bring up a list of instruments available. There are several (ESX24 sampler, various synths, and electric piano, etc.).

The above mentioned channel strip setting shows a list of settings - instruments with a particular setting/voice selected plus other channel plug-ins (reverb, eq, etc.).

Note that many of these menu listings will also have a category for "Garageband instrument" which call up the installed GB settings for you. I cannot recall if Logic 7 does this, but v9 certainly does.

Hope this helps.

Changing just the instrument only changes that one item in the strip.

Once an instrument is loaded into the channel, you can double click on it (on the "ESX24" button in this example). That will open a window with the instrument. The ESX24 is a sampler - click in the voice window and a menu will appear with the available voices. Again, they are grouped by category (ESX24 has piano, guitars, syntheaizers, etc.)

All the above are good indicators about how you can go about selecting instruments.

By upgrading and updating in a non standard or not prescribed way your setup may be slightly different, but since there are so many ways to load instruments, you can always find some that works.

Try to get a grip on the different hierarchies that can reference one particular virtual instrument, such as a string pad sound

Check out the Logic Manual in the help menu
Recommended quick route on your issue
Check out the chapter' Working with Instruments and Effects'
There check out
'Working with Channel Strip Configurations'
Check out 'Channel strip settings'
' Understanding the Library Folder and Menu Structure'
'Loading Presets'

I have noticed you in the passed have expressed difficulty finding any good strings, This could be because you did not like the ones that are there or that you did not find them, even if you have the symphonic Jam Pack. It may be that they have ended up at a slightly different locations in the system with your particular history of upgrading and updating In particular ,

I now have several licenses of Logic and Logic Express and have it installed on several machines and they are all slightly different.

The normal latest updated location would be to access your strings through the channel strip setting popup as becwil describe and there your strings are under Jampack Symphony Orchestra/Strings
On some systems they are rather located under Garageband instruments/Strings. Then you get the Garageband Engine front end called Strings into your instrument plugin, You may be happy with that or you can change it directly to the EXS24 instrument plugin;interestingly when you do that the current sample set and settings are loaded into EXS24 - because the Garageband plugin is anyhow using the EXS24 engine, its just the front-end that is different and much more limited. Using the EXS24 front-end is an advantage in order to adjust the sound to the melody line and phrasing for strings.

Hope that gave some idea and did not confuse too much

Thank you everyone for your time and great responses! I really appreciate that. I'm going to have a proper go this weekend (that tells you my current thoughts on Logic - it daunts me!), and I'll see how I get on.
