As a songwriter I wonder to myself very often, what makes a good song? Is it the melody? The Words? The meaning? The Times? is it the bridge? I have many songs that I have written, however sometimes I don't record them, because if i recorded them, they would lose their power and energy. Which leads me to the next question, is it not the song? Or is it the person performing it? What do you think? |

Yes, it's all the above and, mainly, the capacity of the blend to "produce" emotions, not really easily measurable in term of each single factor contribution! |

I would say there's really no one definable thing that makes a great song. Sometimes it's just a feeling you get, you know? The reason a song is great is different for every great song. It's that ever-present, undefinable "X-Factor" that makes one person love a song when no one else does. |

I tend to agree with Jobu. However, there are arguable factors that help a song gain popularity over others. Many of them are what you mention/question.
Of course this is still subjective and doesn't dictate a song is great or not great.
X-factor is a player for sure. |

well its all been said already...can't really define what is a good song. If you've ever noticed, one hit wonders try to repeat the style of the song that did so well very often. Yet their missing something that leaves them in obscurity. Something just has to fit. Sometimes the best songs are the least thought out...its a lot of luck and a lot of all those other things that you mentioned. |

its (according to stanford lecturere) a balance between the listener being able to predict what's next and what's a surprise |

That's a bunch of crap. There are thing that make up a good song. The performance is the most important part.
If you say its just something, then your claiming that you can't write music. |

By the way, why did you start this forum and ask the question if you seem to already know the answer? |
