It's the liner notes in the album that explains it. And the cowbells.

That's a bunch of crap. There are thing that make up a good song. The performance is the most important part.

Well isn't the performance really all of the above? What you have on there is the performer, which is pretty much the guy/guys playing the song Very Happy

(And you're pretty much getting the same answer from everybody who replied to this thread. And yes, gotta have cowbell)

well its more than just talking to you. I mean, it has to do way more than that.

You need to listen to it more that once, at least 10 times, but everytime you listen to it. Another thing strikes you about it. Everytime you press play you learn a new thing.

That in my mind is a truly GREAT song. There are billions of good songs, however, the rare great song takes another listen.

and cowbell.

I wouldn't say that as a RULE, but ok. I think we're analyzing something here that is a non-quantity...You can't tell a person that a song you love is GREAT, because what if they don't think so? It doesn't make you right and them wrong...so there's really no use trying to set rules as to what makes a song "great"

well, certain songs that i used to hate, i love now because i didn't see them in right light, or it was more acquired then the music i used to listen to, or i was in a bad mood, or i associate it with a band memory, or the song is overplayed.

I think there are songs that everyone loves, its just for those many reasons people are unable to see them in there true form.

what do you think?

A great song is extraordinarily difficult to perform well, but a master can leave you breathless with astonishment over how easy they can make it appear.

A great song strikes the right balance between composition and performer. It exploits that which is uncommon, if not unique, about those who perform it.

A great song is memorable. Often, a great song leaves you with an unanswered question... or perhaps even several.

A great song is not what it appears to be, at first glance. It's both more complex and simpler than it seems, at different stages of understanding. It is rich in meaning.

A great song surprises you... but at the same time is not so alien that you cannot relate to it.

A great song defies being reduced to a formula. Including, of course, this one.

What makes a great song ?..

Well a start, a middle and an end helps, throw in a few lyrics in the form of a few verses and (preferrably) a memorable chorus, for best results use an emotive or current subject.

Mix it all together and cook in a medium sized fan assisted studio with an engaging voice and great musical peformances (preferably organic rather than synthesised), and add the magic secret ingredient ( I saw some on ebay this morning for $25 a hit..bargain !)

Leave the mix to stand for a while, and voila .. the perfect song.

Easy.

I like what deep said... very VERY true.

Dave M, I usually like songs that break the realm of Verses, Bridges and Choruses. I like music that doesn't have a usual formula.

So maybe add in a few surprises to your recipe, however it does sound might tasty!

MSI....the Magic Secret Ingredient ..

Thats the curve ball that no one expects, it appeals to each one of us in a different way.

Thats the beauty of Music, it's an art, not a science, it's beyond definition, there is no formula, just a magic mix of ingredients.

A good song it's a good song. What makes it good?
Who the hell knows? If it sounds good to you, it is good.
As for the questions on top and the choices given, one can choose all of the above or only one of the above. There is no formula.
It all depends on the song. An African drummer can beat all of that with one hit.
And of course cowbell always!!!!!!!!!

It's all of the above. Except for "The Performer". I couldn't care less who is performing as long as they're doing it right.

Chord progressions are good and important, I think they make it so a song is capable of... evolving.

Melody is also very important... with out it you don't have anything really.

I count the meaning and the lyrics as being the same really... and they seem to be icing on the cake.

So... in chooseing which makes a good song, I'd have to say, the Chords, the Melody, and the Meaning are the base of a good song.

But I think that the Melody is the most absolutely important part. Without it, you have nothing. You can mute the chords and the lyrics from a song and it wouldn't sound bad (perhaps it'd sound like it's missing a little bit of something,) but if you remove the melody there is really not much left but some talking and seemingly random notes.

I would say there's really no one definable thing that makes a great song. Sometimes it's just a feeling you get, you know? The reason a song is great is different for every great song. It's that ever-present, undefinable "X-Factor" that makes one person love a song when no one else does.

I mostly agree with jobu, though I picked the meaning as being the overall most important. I think the most important thing about a song or piece of music is the feeling and meaning it leaves behind with you, that tends to stay with you for a long time. Every piece says something different, and even then, what it could mean to you it could mean something entirely different to someone else.
