Ok , sorrrry . I sign up for a site and "like others wonder why things are like the way they are" And if you let us know upfront then , its all good.I wouldnt be on this site if i didnt like it....i am here everyday...But if you can pull up a list of subgenres to tell me its TOO MUCH then i,m sure it can be incorporated into the list of genres.

You can identify a sub -genre in the song description.

Yeah but it will not be shown in recent uploads for the listeners...Sorry but the reason i dont listen to new uploads is because , even if it says rock....it is probably not going to be rock....and when it says Jazz ...it probably will not be jazz...

Huh? Which is it? The users know how to place their tunes in the proper genre … or … the tune is probably going to be in the wrong genre? I'm confused.

Genre compliance and/or listing is overrated.

I'm sure it's been mentioned before in one of the other threads dedicated to this topic... 'n I'm also pretty sure the ruling on this discussion is already final... but... we're already given two choices when uploading a song... a main genre listing 'n, for some reason, an Alternate Genre listing... why not keep the main genre listing for just that, one of the main genres... 'n tweak the alternate genre option for the sub-genre of whichever main one is chosen? Sorry if I'm addin' gasoline to a fire... I just really want a Trip Hop listing. lol

@jl That's what I'm saying about a poll. And you guys are the bosses so you set the rules, the boundaries, the limit of how many genres you could so generously add. I'm sure 1 or 2 isn't going to kill you. Whichever one gets the most votes is the one that gets the cut and everyone else can just suck it up. I'm just thinking that it should at least be tried, even if it's only just 1.

I dunno...Sad

I hear you, Zip, though it would be difficult to even put together a poll. ... How to determine which get on the ballet? Would we get a ton of "write-ins"? Oh boy, yeah, it's a tuffy, for sure.

Then, there would be jerks like me nagging for my own sub-genre along the lines of "Jacked Up".

I still don't know how to generalize my bad fruits.

With the quote "The users of this site arent as stupid as you think they are.....they know what genre they are looking for. And the listeners do also."
I meant to say that if a full/complete list of genre's would be implemented people wouldnt mind going through the list to find what they would need to properly tag their song with the right genre description.

And with the quote "Sorry but the reason i dont listen to new uploads is because , even if it says rock....it is probably not going to be rock....and when it says Jazz ...it probably will not be jazz."
I mean to say that I would be listening to songs NOT properly tagged with the genre described on the new uploads section.

Its like going to rent a video at your local video store....you go in read the description on the case and it says Horror.....but it ends up being Comedy/Horror....It was just not what i was looking for......i wanted what was described on the case. I really dont think thats being Picky .

Oh C'mon now, then leave the subs and please give us a few more main genre's for which a lot of us would be most grateful. Many thx for a great site. Cheers

The thing is that iCompositions has listed the main genres, plus a few more. All the lists I see of main genres on reference sites are even shorter than ours here. One quickly moves into the realm of subgenres when adding to this list.

The only way to make everyone truly happy when picking genres is to leave a blank space to fill in. That will piss off the people trying to find genres, though, because there is no common thread to at least try (and then dealing with typos).

There will never be any agreement over what is too much and what is too little, so, best to just leave it as it is. For my own preferences, I think there are too many as it is now. I can't imagine having to scroll through or even figure out what to type to skip through a pop-up list of every genre out there. Just the sub-sub-genres under the sub-genre of Progressive Rock could fill a screen!

And check out that new music, you genre snobs Smile If you listen to something labeled rock that isn't rock, you can always make a comment on the song that you think it fits another genre. The song description is there to put information, including why you picked a certain genre (i.e. "This is Trip Hop, a subset of the Hip Hop I chose.") If I had a nickel for every time I listened to a Country song here despite hating Country and enjoyed it -- well, I'd have a few dollars -- but the point is just listen to music and get over the genres, especially in a place like this made for collaboration and experimentation and learning and sharing.

Heading off to change all my genres to comedy now...

There are enough sites who genereates the genres from what the users are typing... Soundcloud for example even if there it is a bit too extreme. There should be a way Wink

and how about to limit it to like 5 sub-genres and let the community vote wich 5 it should be?

I mean you don't need to get all genres but a little difference would be nice since chill music that sounds electronic does not equal dubstep hardstyle or dance music.
