Hoping there's a simple solution.
The first song I listened to here (a few days ago), played just fine from start to finish. Since then, however, every song I (try to) listen to stops and starts continually. Sometimes it takes up to a minute or longer for the track to buffer and for the song to continue. Frustrating, to say the least.
I'm on a Mac OSX 10.6.8 and a MacBook Pro OSX 10.7.3. I use Safari, but the problem occurs on Firefox as well.
Can anyone shed light on the situation?
Thanks. (-:

I'm sorry, Donna, that you are experiencing difficulties. I'm not having any issues playing tunes here. Unless other folks reveal that they are having the same problems (to point to it being an iCompositions' issue), I'd venture a guess that the problem somehow lies in your machines/software or in your internet service provider.
If the problem is in your machines/software, perhaps someone else more knowledgeable about internet settings, etc., than I can weigh in on this thread.
My details:
OS 10.7.4
Safari 5.1.7 |

Thanks for getting back to me, becwil. I forgot to mention that there's no problem listening to music on other sites.
In the meantime, I"ll post to one of the Apple forums. |

Hi Donna,
It may be that your the connection between your system and this site is having problems. There are, likely, a number of different routers and switches involved in the connection.
If possible, could you check your internet speed and let us know what your download speed is? Here is a URL called Speedtest.net that will run a simple test to make the measurement. http://speedtest.net/
Maybe one of the routers or switches between your computer and this site is dropping packets. |

That's why I mentioned that there might be a problem with routers or switches dropping packets between her location and iComp. It is likely that the traffic is being routed a certain way by the ISP.
I thought that an analysis of bandwidth might be good to start out with. However, I was hesitant to get into a trace route until we find out what bandwidth we are dealing with. Tracing the actual route from her system to iComp would help a lot in figuring it out, if her bandwidth is marginal. |

Since Donna is in the Netherlands and iCompositions is in in the USA, there may be some problems along the many connections it would take to get the signal to her.
I'm curious, Donna, where are the sites located (in the world) that you can listen to music successfully? |

lummie, thank you for chiming in here. (-: According to speedtest.net, my upload speed is 8.77 Mbps. Test done at circa 5.30am.
becwil, mainly the (songwriting) sites on which I listen to music are in the US.
On IC, the only way I can manage to hear a song more or less to the end is to keep clicking on the play and the pause buttons. |

What is your download speed?
Is the time you give your timezone or iCompositions' (iCompositions' timezone is at the bottom of every page).
It's really odd that the other US sites work well for you and iCompositions doesn't. Bummer! |

becwil, the time shown for me is the IC timezone. I'm actually 6 hours ahead. It's now 7.43am.
I've just checked my speedtest results. It also gave download as 0.15 Mbs.
I'm going to run another test (it's a couple of hours later) to see whether there's a difference.
I agree, it's strange the only problem is with IC. In the meantime, I'm in the throes of 'cleaning up' my MacBook, hoping that might help. (Though I've only had it a year, and there's not that much on it.) |

I live in Denmark and never experienced what you describe.
I am puzzled by your reported speeds and wonder if you mix up upload and download.
Download speed is the speed you have receiving the music or webpages from the site you look at.
Upload speed is the speed you send data out like sending emails and uploading a song.
Normally an ADSL line has 2-20 MBit (depends on what you pay for) download and 0.5-2 Mbit upload.
If you have a 0.15 MB download then there is a problem with your connection.
If you listen to music where the whole song is downloaded first and then played, nothing will pause but it takes time for the song to start. ICompositions buffers a little of the song and stream it. And it works pretty well. Even on a mobile 3G connection.
Can you check your speed again? Do it a couple of times and compare for consistant results. If you still get 0.15 MB it is your service provider you need to call.
If you have lots of speed try these things.
- Shutdown the computer and restart it. That sometimes fix many things
- It may be that the Quicktime is goofed. Reinstalling quicktime may be worth trying. On a Mac the music is played in an embedded quicktime player within the browser. |

Kenneth, those were the figures on my MacBook an hour ago. In the meantime, I came downstairs to tackle the iMac (which was doing the same things as the laptop), pulled out all the cables to the modem, then reconnected them. Et voila!!! LOL
I've just listened to 4 IC songs from start to finish! (-: And the speedtest reading for the iMac is Download=120.1 Mbs & Upload=9.2 Mbs. To me, that's a LOT healthier.
Now I need to grapple with the MacBookPro. Fingers crossed I'll see the same effect.
I appreciate you folks checking out my post and trying to help me solve the problem.
UPDATE: Same result on the MacBook. Now DL=120.0 & UP=9.3. And I can hear songs from start to finish.
I'm gobsmacked. After hours of fiddling about, all I darn well needed to do was unplug and reconnect a couple of cables. LOL
I feel like a total dill. Still, it IS odd that I could listen to songs on other sites. |
