Oxjam is a way to use music to save lives. More details here if you've never heard about it:
http://www.icompositions.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4251
So ciheins, Baboon and I were discussing how to get this going this year. We need the following things:
(a) musicians with brand new, fantastic songs to contribute. No rereleases or remixes, and this year no covers please. Production values should be high - collaborations are welcome, and if you have mixing/mastering skills I'm sure there are plenty of artists who would welcome your assistance.
(b) someone who can host the completed album on a remote server so that it can be accessed (possibly with a password) once people have paid for the album (this money is going to charity, remember!)
(c) someone in charge of accepting the money and routing it to Oxjam.
(d) promotion and sales - the more copies we sell, the more money goes to Oxjam.
I will be making a contribution for (a) and doing all I can for (d). Chris (Heins) may be in charge of (c), although Baboon may know of a website where we can set it all up automatically on the internet. We still need more contributions for (a), (b) and (d). Any offers?
One more thing - Oxjam is supposed to be live music in the month of October, so I would like to have this completed and released in October. I realise this doesn't give you much time, but how much time do you need? Sorry about the hard line approach, but that's how it is. Thanks for listening! |

UPDATE: If you are interested in contributing a song, please sign up on this forum. And a quick FAQ:
Where should I send/upload my completed song?
Not sure yet. Last year we uploaded to iComp, with downloads disabled, and everyone sent me a copy of the songs for me to distribute outwards. That didn't work very well; there is some discussion now of creating a physical CD to sell via CDBaby, but that's just speculation. For now, just work on your song and let us know when you're done!
When is the precise deadline for finishing
Again, it depends on how we're going to distribute this. Aim for mid-October. Aim earlier if you can.
How, when and where can I buy the finished album?
Same as above. Stay tuned! When we know what we're doing, we'll post here. |

You know, I have several thoughts on this. But this is my first one:
What if (and it's not to discount any of the artists here who're considering it) the Sgt. Pepper's tribute disk was the OxJam project?
Or maybe a compilation of songs that had a theme running through it?
Am I an idiot for thinking this?!?!? |

Sgt. Pepper tribute - opens up a bag of worms in terms of copyright issues when we want to sell this (even if it IS for charity).
Themed compilation - much as I like the idea, I would resist it because it limits the music and the participants. For example, if we were to do a theme of "poverty" (to choose an atrocious example) there is No Way I would be able to come up with a song. My brain just doesn't work that way. And I'm sure that people who COULD come up with something on the theme might feel that it is not the best song they possibly could have done for the project. While I am interested to hear what people think of this, my concept of the album is this: if it's full of really bloody great music, people will want to buy it, play it to their friends, pass on details of the project. I think that gives it more longevity. Rather like the Help! album made for the Warchild aid project (if you know this). |
