Status report:
1) We have a number of people ready and willing to donate songs and artwork.
2) We have no distribution system set up.
3) We have no financial channel set up (ie. we have not created a non-profit entity).
I'm really happy about number one, but the second and third things are vital if we are going to raise any money with this. Anyone who knows what to do here, please help! |

Sorry I have no real clue about the others.
But I do have a thought (or 2):
Since this is an iCompositions thing, would it be possible for say, PM and Matt and Gnome to set up a special type of shopping cart, where the album could be bought online and then the tunes downloaded like with the iTunes store? How difficult would that be? This may appeal to those who actually prefer the convenience of a digital file(s) as opposed to a physical CD. And maybe like iTunes, if you purchase the entire album for $xx then you can get a PDf file of all the artwork and liner notes. I'll gladly help with that!
The money would then be transferred to the Non-Profit entity, say iComp Aid Fund or something like that?
In this day or instant gratification, I think this would actaully appeal to more people. I however, always will prefer the physical disc in hand.
Or is this way too naive of me again?
The second thing is this, Oxfam is an awesome organization, but I have no idea if they done anything with the situation in New Orleans. Does anyone know, (and if they have, would it be wrong to ask them-- of course this is totally democratic thing-- this is only a thought) if they could put a certain portion of the proceeds (assuming this one will be MUCH more successful than last year's) to go towards a situation in New orleans where urban poverty is a significant issue?
Again is this a stupid question? |

I have a song, but I'm looking for some collaborators to help me finish it. Some dirty lead guitar work and maybe some keys. |

Two good points, jd.
I think it would be great if people could buy through the site. Let's suggest it. Perhaps it would be useful to have a second outlet for non-members too (iC members are creating this, but we want it to be available to everyone - so you can just email your friends and say "Hey! Buy this!" - but perhaps they could just become members anyway).
Second - I checked the New Orleans question, and it would appear that Oxfam America is involved there. Whether Oxjam contributions will be finding their way directly to that cause I don't know, but I do know that Oxfam has always made a point of saying that it aims to end poverty worldwide - and so their proceeds are distributed as needed. If someone wants to set up a non-profit entity in the USA and have funds go straight to Oxfam America, that's fine with me - I know the money will be distributed to various projects around the world.

I have never done anything like this but there is a new song brewing that I would like to contribute. The lyric came first on this one and I though the only collaboration I ever did was with ETGILLES (who added words and a gorgeous vocal to an instrumental I had already posted) perhaps the first verse will inspire someone to help me finish this ... this is all new to me but here goes (gulp)
"Everyone has got a story
waiting to be told
of trophies and of medals
of getting scarred and finding gold."
I will also contribute in a more rational way - by writing a check to whomever you suggest Ponk. You have been a virtual friendly voice in the ether for years now and I applaud your committment. Send me a message and let me know what to do.

I like that idea jd.. especially because when I quote a price, I tend to forget to include shipping, and buying the envelope to send it. Also, it would be easier on us to send money through there instead of me collecting it all and sending it to oxfam. But I have no problems to do that. I forgot how much postage is, but I probably can get quotes and the envelopes are about $0.60 (padded so the cd doesn't break). Shoot, I need to account for the Cd.. well, let's just hope people want digital, but if they want the cd, I'd be happy to do that. |

Contacted PM about the shopping cart idea. Currently, it's not possible for many valid reasons.
Maybe next year?
However, I wonder if a user with a .mac account, could be able to so such a thing, provided the bandwidth requirements/useage of such a thing doesn't break the TOS with Apple?
There are hosting sites that are a nominal fee a month that could also be used to house a site and then set up a shopping cart for the transactions...
Maybe a special arrangement with CD Baby could also be a possibility? The pro bono publicity could be a real boon for them/anyone!
And Ponkey, any news on the CD printing part? Any contacts and ideas you can share with me? PM me if you have that please.
Thanks. |

Okay, we have had an offer from SoulSurvivor to host the album on yousendit.com. With his premium account, he can host the album for 14 days with unlimited downloads; perhaps we can do this a couple of times in a row to allow more time for people to download. Otherwise, people who already have the album can send it onto others through a trust system.
Money - I now suggest we follow last year's "home-made" approach of just collecting cash from your friends, and burning copies for them yourself. This money can be sent direct to Oxfam - I'm pretty sure it can't be that hard to send a straight donation. How will we know how much we've raised together? We post on the forum and share what we've done. This should avoid the tax issues that Baboon was initially worried about when I suggested one person channel all the money - if it's spread out between that many people it shouldn't be a problem.
If anyone has the knowledge and time to set up a more professional system where the money would be routed through a non-profit entity to Oxfam, with a solid distribution system, please feel free to do so at any stage! But otherwise this should do.
Music: send your song files to me in as high bit quality as you can manage. If you need my email address please message me. Let's aim for October 22nd as a finish date. If you need a couple more days, let me know. When you send me the file, please include the song name and your artist name as you would like it to appear on the album credits, along with your homepage. That can be your iComp page, MySpace, or any other website you have set up. Please choose just one!
Artwork - JD, I believe you and Lenny have an arrangement between you worked out to create artwork which people can download and print out themselves - I will get you the tracklisting as soon as it is finalised!
Any questions? |

Ponkey,
Lenny and I will be doing the artwork. I was just wondering if we were still planning on trying to get limited copies printed.
If anyone else has a pro account with yousendit.com, can you volunteer also? It would be nice if we had 4 or 5 people doing this so that the entire month would be covered...
I wonder if contacting Oxfam to help set us up would also be a realistic way to get some official backing...
As for the album art... If anyone wants their photo on there it would be cool (an idea). But to be consistent, EVERYONE would have to submit a photo of themselves... |

4) ?
---
Collecting money can go to an individual or icomp acct as suggested; one way would be to create a paypal acct, or use the iComp contributions btn, with an additional radio btn to 'earmark' for this cause. Link to a music dnld set or a CD...
But how to let anyone know about this besides the submitters?
A special Ad on Icomp hm pg?
How to announce to other communities? Other music sites, radio stations, etc.?
Would music collection have a loosely grouped genre, or other way to characterize the album, or maybe two options: latin/jazz, rock/elect, classical/ambient, folk/jazz, etc? |
