I wear out head phones relatively quickly , and I have used several brands. The reason I wear them out is because I keep strapping on and off my guitars with headphones, and the cable being partly jammed between the bodies of me and my guitar and when I move my head there will be a pull on cable at the phone.

The Sennheiser HD 215 headphones that I use have a detachable cable, so if the original cable breaks it's not a problem. These headphones sound great as well, with nice clarity. The price isn't terribly bad, either. Very Happy

Senns for me. HD 201 & 218 & PMX 40 & 100, the cheapest ones. they've been w/ me for years. great flat response (except the pmx100. I also use a Sony NC to check if the mastering is OK. for some reason, the isolating feature of the noise cancelling headphone, picks up bad parts in a mix more easily. anyway, If I have the money, the AKG's would be it.

wow. thanks guys. I got lots of work ahead of me. This is great feedback. I think that the top candidates right now are probably Sennheiser, Bose or Denhon.

And Zamzam7, you are completely right. I have gone to a couple stores and shopped around like that, but the thing is, is that I can only hear a limited range of sounds like that. I can't hear my trombone through those, only the sounds they want me to hear, so that's the real test, i suppose....

Thanks again everyone!

Macoco's suggestion was very good, about taking your ipod or MP3 player with you to test them out. Slap some recordings of your sliphorn on your player and you will be set! Good idea Macoco--whatta brain I tell you!

i have a set of sennheiser hd590's which are open-backed cans with a very natural, detailed sound with excellent bass extension. plu they have the detachable lead. the only phones i've tried which were better were stax electrostatics. they cost me about £90 2 or 3 years back so they're not cheap. the catch is the open back, which bleeds sound into the room and is audible on microphone recordings when used to monitor the existing tracks when overdubbing. so i have a pair of bose phones with closed backs which don't leak sound back into the room, but which are more coloured, having bose's trademark enhanced bass. they cost about the same as the sennheisers and sound great with portable mp3 players and are demonstrated using i-pods in bose stores.
but for mixing and mastering it's the sennheiser's every time.

I use Sennheiser HD280 Pros and they are fantastic, I use pretty heavy bass in my compositions, and these headsets are made to handle it without distortion...and they are really comfortable as I will wear em for hours and hours.

Here's some info from Guitar Center: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Sennheiser-HD280-Pro-Closed-Back-Headphones-101597318-i1126138.gc

Hope this helps,

Best answer is try them with music you are familiar with. All our ears are different.

I use: Extreme Isolation EX-29 for my mixing and listening. They are flat response monitor quality for $100. have bought more expensive ones which my kids have broke but these are the BEST QUALITY out there without going to 300-4000 price range.

Check them out! I got them this last summer and as you can see my mixes are 10000% better afterwards! And I have real studio monitors too (that I don't use now LOL)

Apparently there's something about these Sennheisers that are really erm...cool. I've never heard of the brand before but maybe I'll go looking...hehe right now I'm using a pair of I-don't-even-know cheap headphones that I bought from a movie-renting store on Halloween, which made them limited candy edition headphones, so they're York Peppermint Patty headphones that were like...$5.00. That probably sounds really lame, but they've been working for a while. Maybe they'll die soon and I'll go look for Sennheiser...

Sennheiser HD 201. Very reasonably priced and they seem to do the job. I also check mixes on an ipod which highlights problems with top end and hiss.
