would it be possible to have a facility to upload files to be downloaded only by specified members - perhaps as an attachment to internal messages?
it's often frustrating to find that files sent via e-mail exceed mailbox capacities and although there are numerous ways to exchange larger files, it would be handy to be able to do so on the site. |

Another way to do it would be...
1. Upload as normal.
2. 'Archive' the track. (Backstage 'Music' click 'Archive')
3. Copy/Paste the URL as a link in a message to the specific member you wished to share the track with. |

that works ok to an extent, but others can access the file via the latest uploads list. i'm not too concerned about that in this case, but some work in progress should never see the light of day! |

Free FTP sites such as yousendit.com are very good reliable sites for large file transfer.
If you are a MobileMe service holder, your own Cloud can be used to transfer private files to specific individuals, too.
iChat and Skype can be used to transfer files. |

thanks for the links becwil. it just seems to me that collaboration is such an important and fun part of icomp that it would enhance the site to have a file exchange facility available. could it be considered in future upgrades? or does it introduce more legal problems? |

Right, tele, I understand your point. I have no idea as to what it would take from the HTML and/or legal perspectives of implementing your idea. PM will need to chime in on that part of your inquiry.
In the meanwhile, the alternative methods are it. |

Collaborations are one of the most important parts of the iCompositions community and we want to do everything we can to make it easy for artists to exchange music and ideas.
With that said, because we have such limited development and financial resources, it's very important for us to remain focused on our primary functions as a music community. I believe that the existing file exchange services out there do a very good job at providing the services our members need to complete their collaborations. If iCompositions were to get involved, it might remove a step from the process of sending a song file, but it would add many layers of complexity behind the scenes that would distract us from other, more important services we provide. |

This a fantastic program. You can create folders just for the people your collaborating with and many other features. You can do all this without a browser! |
