I used drum loops all the time, because I can't play drums. I search, mix , tweak or even make my own loop patterns to fit the music I want to create. That I considered creativeness in one way.

Thanks Eidolonia for the explanation, and to everyone for their views on this. This inspired me to find Apple Loops in GarageBand which I hadn't done yet, and I have to say I was like a kid in a sweetshop with what I found!! I then spent the next 4 hours having enormous fun creating a tune using only loops which I will upload here in due course Smile

Regards the debate, I think I agree with those people who say it can't really compare to playing an instrument, and I'm not sure I'd be happy to call myself a "musician" if that is all I did, HOWEVER iComp cleverly takes the broader view anyhow as it labels us "Artists" not Musicians. I think if you create music only using loops then you are very much an artist/artiste, but perhaps more a "musical arranger" or "musical director" than a "musician" per se.

The skill, as I see it so far, in loop usage is that you definitely need musicality in order to select the right loops that work together, get them & keep them in phase, decide when they interact & when they don't, create expressiveness through tonal and volume control etc etc. This is very much more than just the technical skills of accurate cuts & pastes etc. Not everyone would have the musical skill to end up with a tune or song that was truly a good work of art, so my verdict is let's enjoy & appreciate both methods for what skills are required and what the end product is. As someone earlier in this thread said - Music is music.

There are many people that use loops and i don't give a damn if it is a great loop management. What matters for me is the result of that management. I can create many things with loops that people could not recognize them as they are. If you can make the right cut, the right change of pitch and other transformations that permits you to have the final product you want, who cares if i use loops or not?

Ziur, I bought a trumpet yesterday... And I just can't get even the basic note from the trumpet, here, Bb (C)... I'm playing guitar for almost 30 years, and I don't consider myself as a good musician... Maybe you should do the same, and you'll understand that when you're saying that you're a musician because this or that, well, just go get a trumpet... And let see what you can do with it compare to just add effects to loops... Because trumpet need quiet a good understanding in music, and you have to know quite alot of things to just get a note out of it... Imagine getting all the emotions out of it like Miles Davis, or any other trumpeteer out there...

Well, Digipal, i work in composition because is my business (i am a teacher, not a performer...) and, as composer, i had to learn all the particularities of all instruments. The example you gave about the trumpet i understand the problem because i deal every day with electrocoustic problems (this is my area subject). I am not saying to substitute performers, or something like that. Of course that we need people like Miles Davis to enchant our ears. The subject that i want to express is that we could use everything available to do music and, for people that are not experimented in the world music, loops are a good way to start. In my case, i don't use loops sold commercially. Normally i create them for myself. I have an advantage to have at school a little studio where i could do some experiences when i have some time available.

I've used loops in many of my songs because I'm a singer and I love to write lyrics. I like the variety of sounds I can get from loops. I can have a small quartet or a symphony orchestra. Sure, you can tell me to learn to play the violin, viola, cello, bass, timpani, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, etc.. Truth is, I don't have the time, inclination, resources or desire to learn every possible instrument on the planet. I just want to sing. So I string together loops, write some lyrics and then I sing.

Can I play any instrument? I used to play the sax and the guitar (guitar was recently stolen from me, so that road is closed). Right now I'm learning the ukulele. I was never great at any instrument, but I've had positive feedback on my singing. That makes me happy. It's why I've often used loops.

I agree with Mosaica - music IS music.

Its in the EAR of the beholder.

What I think is an ace track/song someone else might consider it naff & vice versa.

I only use loops because I haven't got the talent to either sing or play an instrument. I tried playing the bass about 20 odds yrs ago but failed miserably.

I have listened to all sorts of music over the last 40 odd yrs so I think I know how to knock up a "soundscape".
I do try to fit the loops into some kind of logical progression and try different effects and not just settle for the original loop sound.

Loops have certainly allowed me to express myself musically and I really appreciate i-comp & loops to allow me to do this.

I would never consider myself to be a musician or songwriter but I do think that those of us who do use loops shouldn't be regarded as 2nd class on the music front.

I here some gr8 loops only stuff on this site and its always a pleasure to here so much talent either loop, part loop or real instruments.

Hope you all have a cosmic day.

Hmm. I live essentially in the jungle and when my audio equipment got moldy or just croaked, I've had to entertain myself with loops. It's like composing. You can split a loop into many parts, change the octave, tempo beat, even the notes. In edit view you can zoom in and out as you create your own riffs wihin a song. Only bother to me is that GB doesn't zoom in far enough. For that, I export to Itunes, make an MP3 and then dig in further in Audacity. Way fun.

If only I could chime in without causing the pot to boil over again.....lol.....

When I have the pleasure of listening to an exclusively loop based track that's well put together such as some of the stuff posted by TVRicky......it's a pleasure!

But that level of quality is not the norm....

My beef is with those who just throw anything together.....add copious amounts of 'verb n delay......then call it done....

'nuff said

Aside from the interesting debate here, I just wanted to say what a brilliant, lucid and detailed reply Eidolonia gave - that was so perfectly summed up!

My humble contribution to this thread : I do use loops like many iComp artists, specially for instruments I cannot play on my midi keyboard (efficient electric guitar solo for instance) and above all for percussion and drums, but I could not be satisfied if I created a loops only music.

The only thing I hate is people (bigdaddycee has referenced one of them) who post a without soul loops only music and fool their audience. I mean people rarely notice the "Loop use" information of a song and if they do not have the same application they believe the music is an original composition. And if you have the same application (GarageBand in my case), you just listen to something your have heard a thousand times when seeking in your loop browser.

Hi everyone and Happy New Year! I recently discovered this thread and would like to contribute my opinion since I have been mentioned. I am in awe of the musical compositions offered on this site by musical magicians such as..Musicleft..Eagle..abzwork..bigdaddycee..ihussain..filmscorz..Groove..and on and on. My understanding is this site feeds the world at any time of the day or night you can see the statistics of who is listening for instance at this moment there are 181 users online: 16 registered, 18 hidden, and 147 guests. I am trying to connect to the 147 guests. I am in fact a looper. I hear the concerns of actual musicians and understand some of them to be valid. However, there are those of you who call yourselves musicians who actually have absolutely little musical talent in composition mixing and actual Production Techniques. Do you see loopers like my self attacking you! I think not. Loopers must have an innate musical talent to actually compose music from a variety of sounds presented to them and present them in a way that is appreciated by the world. I notice a personal attack in the last comment by a person of very little talent and musical ability but that's his problem. The details and effort it takes to produce music from only loops is an art in and of itself. My music is a testament to that. I do not use GB loops exclusively for I have a library of considerable variety. So to attack anyone who is trying to express themselves musically to me is a testament to the insecurity of what you yourself are capable of. Live and let live. Worry about you and what you do and leave others to what they do. The ability to make music from loops has only enhanced my desire to learn the 'musical instrument I do own' That is my next challenge. I love the music you very talented musicians offer hear and I will continue listening and appreciating your hard work and dedication to your craft.
