Very fascinating to see how different people view their own talents. I think some people are under-rating their abilities on the keyboards.
Carla- yes you did post a comment for me, and I have been looking for some off-tempo material. Also saw you post about the e-jamming... I need to check it out.
Loops- I agree that loops are nothing more than a collection of notes. Alone, they are sounds. Properly placed together, they are a song. No shame in using them- it's still creative art as far as I am concerned.
Thanks everyone for the comments - I am checking out the iComps supergroups- I am humbled by what I heard from just a couple quick listens.
I am here for fun, and to make myself a better musician. I am flattered that everyone who listens to my music here are musicians- the toughest audience to please (other than yourself).
Offbalance- four chords? I thought there were only 3 chords in rock 'n roll! |

Oh, cool! Thanks for the tips on other groups Becs and OB.
Oh, phew! Sometimes I think I've done something but I haven't and it's still just sitting in my 'draft' queue! Glad this wasn't one of those times. Why off-tempo, for my 3/4 and 6/8 challenge? Don't let that limit you! Actually, I'm always swamped but that doesn't stop me from getting excited about new things and people. I can't force when a song comes out so I ask people for collabs and know that eventually something will come of it.
BTW, I realize in rereading my last post that some people might get the wrong idea concerning what I wrote about keyboard players not sending me things. What I meant more specifically was that I've asked some people for piano pieces to no avail - some of them have told me I can use what they have up, which is greatly appreciated, but I mean in this case, something done specifically for me to work with.
When looking back through my collabs on this site, it would seem that about 36 out of 104 contain music sent to me specifically. The others are all based on open collabs I found on the site or which people pointed me to. Within those open collabs are some great keyboard players and pianists - some of the best I've heard, amateur or pro. Amongst the 36 which were sent to me specifically: 9 are guitar and/or bass, 3 are piano w/ or w/o percussion, all of the others are keyboard synths or VIs i.e. a total of 24. Mixed in with those are the ones which also include brass and/or strings/woodwinds/etc. So, I need to rephrase my earlier statement - I've had more keys and synths in my collabs than anything else so it's only the ones which sound like a stand-alone piano which are sparse on the ground! Basically, it's much ado about nothing. (!) Glad I looked into that because proves I don't know what I'm talking about! |

I dunno. I just took Porcupine Tree's song "Four Chords That Made a Million" at its word. I'm a rank amateur. Heh. |

I use a MIDI keyboard to play melody lines, bass lines, solos and work out harmonies and rhythms. Once I have the basic sketch, I then do most of my work in the MIDI editor, since I don't have the performance skills to play the parts to my satisfaction 99 44/100 % of the time.
Nor am I interested in investing the time in becoming a "keyboard performer" - my main interest lies in making the end result sound like what's in my head or in discovery, not in its performance per se. |

I'm in the League of non-keyboardists. I can't play a single chord. All my tracks her have many instruments I can't play a note on. How is this accomplished? MIDI files, yayyy! lol
I've never written a song, in fact have never played my bass away from home. If it weren't for midi, I'd have hours and hours of tracks of me playing to a drum beat, over and over. I use the midi's to help me learn songs I'm interested in. The way virtual instruments have improved, somethings, depending on how well the original person/people did the original MIDI, the results can be pretty good. |

hi all
i'm new and still navigating the site and bumping into stuff inadvertently.
greg's post struck a chord — fun and self-improvement. quel concept! i'm like some of you, my instruments, in order of ability are guitar, semi-pro for a while, bass, reeds, keyboards, although it takes me 90 minutes to untangle my fingers after 10 minutes of playing. i've only had GB for a couple of months and i'm hooked. i've been here for a few days and i'm gobsmacked (as the british say) by the level of musicianship and the professional recording engineering i've encountered all over the place.
getting my little ego pumped up to post something or other and/or contribute a little something something to a collab.
is there
a) someplace with an explanation on how to post tuneage?
b) some central repository of collab-ready tunes?
thanks all and congratulations.
cheers |

MrLifto, in the Help section is info about converting your music to the correct format for uploading and there is more info in the Music section on that same page under the Help Categories just to the right.
As far as tunes to collab on, a good place to begin looking is in the Collaborations topic on the main Forum page. Remember to get permission from the original artist before you post a piece to which you've added parts.
Keep poking around the site, you'll catch on.
Always, too, you can pop into the chat room and ask questions. Usually folks are there who can help you.
Welcome to iCompositions. The best place in the world! |

Also, if you just search on the words 'collab' or 'open collab' you will get a nice, long list to look through. You can search the whole site, or music. |

I see both sides of the keyboardist. And I can only play keyboard/piano. I find keyboardists very unique and talented. I think that everyone is just so interested in playing guitars, and what-not, a lot more than keyboards and such. Which makes me think that keyboardists are extremely unique. Then there is also the point that keyboardists sort of cheat because they can technically create the sound of any instrument. Even though I feel constrained because I can only play a keyboard, I use it as much as I can to its fullest extent. I create all my songs with midi in real-time, even the beats I create myself. There's only a select few songs with loops, but those ones are purely only loops.
If you're solely a keyboardist, you should work it! I think keyboardists are the best! They deserve much more credit than people give them. |

hmmmm.....interesting thread.....I actually started on violin.....then trumpet......then drums....then one day my friends and I decided to start a band....our first practice was in my parents living room....we wanted to play "Spring Rain" by Paul Silvetti....I picked out the chords on my mom's piano.......and have been hooked on keys ever since...(this was when I was 9 or so.....lol) in retrospect I shoulda picked a cheaper instrument like harmonica.....keys are way expensive....and heavy at 3am when you're packing up after the gig.....lol |
