I don't think this will ever come to pass or even to a vote. It is clearly a violation of "The Bill of Rights" ( protection of personal liberty & property) as well as several spelled out "First Amendment Rights", (speech & press) but also the 9th Amendment was created just for this such a thing so Congress could not over step there power nor that anything not mention or to be evident at the time would still be protected under the Constitution. Since people make a living off the internet, it pretty much changes it from a luxury to a necessity, or at the least makes it something to be taken serious by the People & Government.
That's not to say Government won't hose us but it's usually under the cover of darkness and a lot slicker deceit, plus we're not at War with the Internet and need a bill rushed through A first year law student could get this knock down. |

I often used megaupload to exchange songparts with collaborators. Now the FBI closed the site, so make no mistake, changes are already taken place.
A free internet is an illusion! |

That is Chinas vision of a "good" Internet.
Wouldn't Facebook and other social networking sites be considered to be websites with "User Uploaded" content? I'm pretty sure that pictures and widens found for that... |

I am sitting here in the UK watching all of this, wondering how its all gonna pan out. Obviously we have own questionable laws and legislations here, but nothing like this yet...
Obviously I have a vested interest as well with MSI being based mainly in the US, where we rely on user submitted materials!
I hope Moses is right! |

Congress shelves anti-piracy bills
Looks like all the hollering has been effective. Back to the drawing board.
@Lapskin In my understanding, it's not about anyone posting their own material online in any way they want to, it's about posting someone else's material without their permission or license to do so. |

It's MUCH more than Copyright issues. We already have those laws. It's about with what methods they can enforce those laws. Pre Emptive shut downs, shutting down sites that might post a link to sites that are illegal, and the like. As far as I can tell. |

I hate SOPA. I like the fact that it wants to help protect copyrights, but it's way to broad, and it's not what the bill will do to sites, like iComp, and youtube, and google. But it's the thought that they COULD be shut down on a whim if the government felt like it with this bill.
There is so much actual legit file sharing going on though, business wise, and even just down to sending files for a collab on yousendit or Mediafire with no copyright violations at all. With this bill, the government is not going to care. Just shut them all down. And then everyone suffers.
Then what's after that? I think the government will look at email as a copyright threat too. Since there will be no more internet basically, people WILL be using email like crazy, and sending things that way too. Including copyright stuff that previously was on the internet. So what would stop the government from censoring emails? or even shutting it down. if it's not already gone when google, and yahoo get shut down.
Then after that? Who knows, the government WILL find something else to take away out of our rights even after that. It's just one thing after another. |
