Thanks so much to Blaine Transue at the wonderful radio station KSVY in Sonoma California. This version of "Still Waters" was played in 2008 by Blaine, with a great intro from icomposition artist Zallaz. We appreciate Laz getting Northwest music on the air!

Still Waters is a song Kenny Lowther and I wrote about our children. Kenny came up with the riff when we were jamming in his garage back in 2004, just brainstorming on new song ideas. I loved his riff, which reminded me of our Northwest's own Pearl Jam. I wrote the lyrics that evening, thinking about these fragile innocent souls all growing up to face a brave new world.

The song is loosely based on a set of 4 paintings by Thomas Cole in 1840 called "The Voyage of Life" that have always been favorites of mine in the National Gallery in Washington DC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Voyage_of_Life If you ever get a chance to visit the display in DC, I recommend it because the 4 paintings together have a remarkable effect. The 4 paintings are Childhood, Youth, Manhood, and Old Age. I took a little liberty with the theme in the lyrics, and instead made the main character a strong woman growing up to face the raging seas, and then undertaking a 5th challenge, Childbirth and completion of the circle (and a nod to Live's Lightning Crashes, another favorite song of mine).

I hope you enjoy the song, and here's looking forward to next week's MUGShots Live program. I hope some special guests will be joining.

All the best,

Alan

Great vibe in this song! Love it! It has many things that remind me of bands like King's X and Pearl Jam and others.

What fun to hear this intro along with the song! Congrats on the radio play! And it's educational to boot. smiley

Great song, guys! It would be fun to sing along with it on a road trip and it would also be good for listening to while living one's life. Everything's good as is but I'd even like it if the verse vocals were a little more forward in the mix, especially in the first verse. Love the harmonies, also.

This is HOT! fantastic recording, great vocals. I would have like to hear the vocals mixed louder, at times the music is dominating over the vocals. The composition is powerful, I enjoyed the warm mix.
Very dynamic playing too . . .
