I composed this music on a keyboard, using real instrument samples & sounds I've contrived through software synthesizers.

The Hard To Bear (HTB) collection.

I've wanted to focus on percussion with each of these pieces in the HTB series, in that I began with a percussion idea and then fleshed out the rest of the sounds from that perspective. The tune doesn't always end up remaining a heavily slated percussion piece, that's just where it begins.

Comment and critique welcomed.

A nice lilt and some fine texturization in your sound palette. I like the Oboe line. Curious to know your process...all midi production? This sounds too good for midi?

Sure, soulima, thanks for asking. I use sound samples from Logic and Native Instruments/EastWest mainly. I've got several big box collections of NI samples. This oboe is from one of those collections. I play them into Logic via my old ensoniq keyboard (which I've finally hooked up to my DigiRack interface). I edit the heck out of my "playing" in the MIDI Edit Field, for I'm just beginning to learn how to actually play piano as an instrument (taking lessons now). When necessary, I do a lot of very detailed editing per note with all the MIDI possibilities the Edit Field allows. I also, create some of my own sound concoctions from the great software synths that Logic offers.

My "drum kit" sound is produced mostly from Logic's Studio Toolkit (GarageBand has it, too) and I separate each part of the kit onto its own track for better control with effects and placement. Snare on one track, kick on one, cymbals on one, toms on another, etc, as if it's a miced live kit. I write all the percussion note for note in the Edit Field.

My process can take weeks. smiley And I love the realm of digital possibilities these days!

How are you getting on there?
Nice to be able to pop on in and hear one of your distinctive soundscapes. Even though I hear you all over this piece, you have evolved tremendously. Very cool.

Keep up with those lessons. They are very rewarding.

Very, very well done Bec. Tremendous compositions and great build, tension when the tube bells kick in.. I absolutely love this piece. Great job. I hear the motif in here from your last piece and the motif is consistent with a great variation within that motif. Stellar job!

im listening in a temp way (thru the pc single speaker) will be back when full setup ready,

it builds I like the way drums stand out already, I didnt know you can break drum loops out into separate trACKS for processing . theres also a bit of experimentation in the pads I think,
good easy listening music will easily lend itself to them docu-stories and images

very nice piece with variations at intervals that retain the attention. given the title i was anticipating hearing some indian instrumentation - or would that be too obvious? the beauty of midi is that you can reassign parts to different instruments. i like to do that quite a lot. i'd be fascinated to hear an "indian" version of this.

When I first read your short description I thought you said you were calling the collection "Hard to Hear" so I was prepared to get out the super-fidelity headphones. I also like the build that takes this from classical ambience to a more agressive synth driven piece.

I particularly appreciate your insight into your arrangements to know that you perform and score everything without chopping loops - makes me listen closer to those parts for the individualistic expression you give them.

Enjoyed this Bec.
Quality composition here, it has all the trademark diminuendos and crescendos that I look out for in a masterpiece, and this fits the bill nicely. Well done.

Airy, light and fresh beginning morphs into a more solemn piece with interesting and beautifully subtle percussion (someone skipping or dancing?) I like how it then opens up into a wonderfully carefree music-spree, great percussion, creative in the extreme. This is a remarkable piece and illustrates your command of musical styles as well as your refreshing originality!

This is rrreally coooool. Really unique blend of rhythm and sounds...I like how you build it up and use the moogy synth over the top. I bet you are a fan of Genesis, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Yes.

I read your note above about the process that you go through to write. I go through a very similar process. I am a self taught keyboard player, and I need to start some formal lessons too. I never use loops and I play every note, but I do quite a bit of editing to get it just right. I also use a vintage keyboard - a Korg DS-8 from 1986. I was sooooooo excited when I first plugged it into a mac and intsantly made it sound like a grand piano using Garageband... I was hooked! I upgraded to Logic Pro about a year ago, and I still have not begun to explore its capabilities. I learn more with every song and I especially love the vintage organs, electic pianos, and clavs...really cool stuff

I really like the way this piece maintains an improvisational quality. Did you compose it with this mindset or were musical decisions labored over.

Oh, and thanks for nice words concerning my recent composition.
