I joined MacJams a week ago and found Drakonis there - I'd never known him here at iComp but now I am very aware of his music here also. Ember is a project he started several years ago but which is an open collab here and at MacJams. This is my first reaction to Ember - which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music in its own right! I heard a few notes and knew I needed to record something right away - this is the result of that first recording - it's just what came up for me aurally and lyrically as I listened to the piece the first time all the way through. Thanks Eduard, for a wonderful experience. smiley

All the lovely music and the Ember concept: Drakonis
All the vocal traveling and lyrics: Carla J. Patterson

My mail art friend Pierpaolo made a video on his current show using this song as the soundtrack - come have a look! It's really interesting and enjoyable:

Carla ... haunting ... I like your vocal riffs - the first one is different from the second, so there's variety...although I would have prefered the first one repeated! You have quite a range! Your lyrics are deep and philosophical! Very enjoyable...pity the song ended kind of abruptly for me. Great job overall. Stan

Carla, thank you for taking Ember for this first spin... I agree with RavingRedHead that this has scat-flashbacks to Pink Floyd's amazing Great Gig in the Sky, as well as a touch of Native American chanting... very cool! You hinted that this will not be your last take on it, so I eagerly look forward to more from you. Enjoy!

LOL... I didn't know what was meant by the great gig in the sky but I'll go check it out now! I wasn't a bit Pink Floyd fan the first time around but, more and more, I like their music as I get older. I always know I'll find new things in old music at different times in my life but never know where I'll find them. smiley

Thanks for all the cool comments! I so appreciate them. Glad you liked it, Eduard, and I will definitely be revisiting this piece because it's so evocative.

One thing I love about what happened on this, by the way, is that that first part really does sound like native american chanting - but in my higher voice! That's very cool to hear, I think, and not what I'm used to hearing. As always, whatever music I've heard throughout my life, whatever sounds and words I've heard, are all somewhere in my improvs. And an extra element, something in the moment, that channels them into a cohesive whole which is as surprising to me as I sing it as it is to anyone else who hasn't heard it yet. That's one of the true joys of improvisation for me.

Heavenly. Soaring free. The result is a beautiful open collaboration, a brilliant series of improvs, a beam of light. Glad you captured this string of melodies - a true expression of heart and soul.

I understand the Floyd reference (particularly "the great gig..."), but I also am hearing striking similarities to Lisa Gerrard and Enya in these sweeping vocals. Very nice.
