In this instrumental piece I’ve made use of a theme from the opera OBERON (1826) by German composer Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826). In the mid-19th century the tune and harmonies of the theme were co-opted for a Protestant hymn and published with words by George W. Doane. Here are the opening lines of the hymn, and the impetus for “Night Song”: “Softly now the light of day/ Fades upon my sight away.”

A slow and subtle progression. Spare, yet beautiful harmonies are at work in a "classical" arrangment here. Very nice! I'll have to check out Oberon.

Grazie molto!

what a lovely, mood-y piece. Excellent textures and timbral contrasts, great listen - morning, evening, any time.
