I have always liked this song mainly because of the beautiful Intro guitar work and the lyrically melodic rhythm guitar by Mr. Ed. the lyrics are quite funny and typically David in his best 80's moment. I didn't get there was a reference to Lesbians until quite recently! LOL Quite a song! I enjoyed the challenge and I hope you enjoy the listen!

=======Production Notes=======
The guitar used is my 70's yellowish strat with scalloped frets and a brass nut. All the tones on this are standard Logic Presets for guitars with no tweaking. I enjoyed playing the bass. Michael Anthony really had fun playing this song I bet! I did this from memory and I haven't listened to the original in years. The drums are Ultrabeat drums in Logic. I mixed it at -6db and used some Ozone4 on the guitar and drums as effects to enhance some sounds.

In mastering I used Ozone4 and the standard Logic Stereo Mastering. The mp3 is at 320kbps.

Many musicians often forget that Mr. VH was quite an accomplished rhythm guitar player as well as having an amazing lead playing technique for his day. Being a rhythm guitar player is the ground work for pursuing and mastering lead guitar playing. But I digress....

I am glad this song is brining joy to everyone! smiley

Peace,
Tony

I'm really surprised, because, to my ears, the tones you've used are very different than Van Halen's, but it still sounds like Van Halen. Some would say, of course it sounds like them, it's their composition. But what I'm saying is that you've created a Van Halen 'sound' using different sounds than they used. For example, your drum kit sounds bigger and more expansive to me than the way Alex's kit is normally miced and recorded, but even with the change, it still sounds like his kit. I feel the same way about the guitar and vocal tracks. New sounds that echo the originals, especially when they are working together in the song.

I suppose some might call this a tribute style cover, and I could see that, but with the comments I've made so far, I hope you catch that I'm suggesting this is not a tribute style cover, but somehow manages to be one at the same time.

I'm sure you know your performances and the mix are totally top notch fantastic. Your take on this changes and enhances my feelings about the original. I love that you weren't slavishly working for days to 'recreate' all the individual sounds of the take VH did before, because that's what makes this interesting, all the nuanced stuff going on, it's really made me think a lot.

THis is bloody amazing. What playing! What singing! What backing vocals! You ARE a 1man van halen. Perhaps it's not just DLR that may have to fight for a place in the new tour lineup! Well done.

I think Eddie had said his sound is in his fingers and the way he plays. I believe that. You can put Ed in a different set up and I bet he stills sounds like Ed. I studied his playing style and after many years of trying I understood what he meant about the way he touches the strings and his note choices. There is an essence in music that if you don't get then you can be technically accurate and still not sound like them. I try to understand them beyond the technical into the mental states they are in when they play. It has helped me much to understand my musical heroes this way.

Hope that helps someone....

Peace,
Tony

I remember this song in the Van Halen II album. Eddie is one of my guitar heroes, too. Excellent cover Tony, I liked your version. Great vocals too. Are you the one who sang the main vocal melody? Cheers! smiley

Tony,

You know I did see these guys in concert many a times, never bothered when they kicked Dave out though.

I would tell you that you did an amazing job and to be quite honest why bother imitating, this is you man... Original version of an old Van Halen tune.

I never really understood why Mean Streets never did so well, perhaps it was too hard for most of the fans.

Rock was my first love, and have moved on and very deeply into jazz and attempting to be original and creative. But this makes me want to listen to more rock. Good mix, great guitar playing and AMAZING vocals...I think Id much rather hear you sing than DLR, and whoever else sang for EVH. Seriously great vocals. Enjoyed the laugh at the end haha. Just great work all around.
