I had plans to do some originals but this song kept gnawing at me to give it a try. So I went to do it not knowing how to play it. In studying it over a few weeks and thinking about it I decided to make some changes that I would have done if I were lucky enough to be a Beatle. Pauls bass playing is exceptionally great and adds to the energy of the song once again proving he is a Masterful bass player. Ringo is amazing at the way he choses what to play as well going for simplicity and adding to the song. During the Lead Break it fluctuates between 3/4 and 4/4.

I let it Jam out a bit at the end since I liked the groove. Also the really fast lick during the verses is not played like they did it (for those who may care or wonder why). having a monkey on your back was slang in music circles for being addicted to Heroin. Sadly, during this time John was experimenting with the drug. He used it to escape the pressures during his divorce and time with Yoko Ono. Thankfully, he stopped.

Personally, I think it is a song about a monkey! smiley

========Production Notes=============

First, I used my 1960 Pre-CBS Fender Strat. The reason I chose this was that John and George didn't really start using Strats until later and there was a single coil tone that was calling out to me in this song. So all the guitars are that Strat. I used the phase position between the bridge pup and the middle pup for the lead lick to add a cool progressive 60s idea to the feel as well. I knew that Jimi Hendrix would bring the Strat out of the cliche "Surf Rock" into the annals of Rock and that the Beetles, specifically Paul really promoted and liked him in England.

I mixed this at -6db for the pre-Master Mix and then Mastered it using Gain, Multimeter, Chan EQ, Multipress, AdLimit and Ozone4 in that order when Mastering. The vocals were mixed center and 11 and 2 O'clock respectively. All the guitars were done with Logic9 Preset guitar rigs.

(And George primarily played a Strat from the Sgt. Pepper album on -- but this one featured John's '58 Epiphone Casino run through a '66 Vox Deluxe.)

Just the explaination of what you used and how you got the sound was worth clicking play, then when you click play... Instantly we are no longer in Kansas it's off to see the wizard smiley I didn't listen to the Beatles and still don't listen that much now, but I'll definitely listen to you. For you to have done this all by yourself and make it sound up to date speaks volume of your talents. Thanks!!!

The Beatles sound is unmistakable, not least because you seem to have mixed it almost like they did in the early days of stereo (extreme right or left for instruments, though I notice you also left some in the middle, which they didn't do back then). No surprise your performances are top notch, all of them. I especially like your take on the drums on this one, very well done. You know I'm not the biggest Beatles fan, but I think it's a nice song and that your take on it is probably better than the original. (I'm no writing more, btw, because I have so many of your songs to listen to this morning).

Oh, what a crisp sounding version! The choice of Strat is really cool. I went through a period trying out Zep tracks with my Strat and it's a real challenge because it pushes the articulation to the front. Very cool version indeed!
