The opening measures of the Fourth Movement of Mahler's 2nd Symphony, there's a "hymn" played by the brass - the last note is too low for any brass instrument to play, so Mahler gives it to the contrabassoon. The CB functions as a fundamental pitch, and all the brass notes are literally "overtones". Heavenly!

The epitome of loveliness.

O Roschen rot!

Agreed... lovely.

Should I ever write anything so pristine, dear lord take me now.
Wird leuchten mir bis in das ewig selig Leben!

Icomps doesn't like my umlaus, I see.

Gott in Himmel, I love Mahler.

Listening again. This slice of Mahler #2, influenced me, and yes, I noticed the contrabassoon. As a student in university, I made it my mission to listen to Mahler. I once awoke in the middle of the night, and with my roommate away, played Mahler's 2nd symphony at top volume from start to finish, with score in hand.

Even the chord progressions in this excerpt influence me. Funny how, you identify a specific, and exact section of music that held me enrapt. I suppose it could be played by a tuba, but not with the degree of attack that a decent contra player could handle.

I've played a contrabassoon in my university years. It's easy to do this poorly and difficult to do it well. I say, we should make all the first bassoon soloists in all the major orchestras around the world spend one year and just play the contra. They'd get it right.

Such a beautiful instrument, and I like how Arlen Fast from the NY Philharmonic has redesigned the contra to make it an instrument that responds and speaks, instead of this phlegmatic instrument that only the worst player in the orchestra tackles.

B.T.W., the best version of Mahler #2 I.M.O., is from the 'non musician' chap who is not a musician, and who only 'conducts' Mahler #2. Can't remember his name, but he is better than Bernstein!
