I have been improvising a lot using the keyboard alone lately and this is one of the results. It's a boys' choir and I really love the harmonies which came out of this late-night musing I was doing a few nights ago. I was going to upload it as a choral piece with no words but suddenly these words came to me and I added them as spoken word to the music. I hope it works for someone who hears it as much as it does for me.

If you would like to hear the music alone, without the poetry, please come visit my page at Composer's Forum and click on The Boys' Lament there. http://composersforum.ning.com/profiles/profile/show?id=1jqv3xyxdn5b1

(This is an overlay of two photographs I took in Epsom, Surrey at a chapel with an old cemetery on the grounds - I have a fondness for cemetery statuary and layouts. I painted each of the images in with other photographs acting as paint brushes. I really love how this turned out and it seems perfect for this piece somehow.)

Thanks, Trevs! I appreciate your comments and your questions, too! smiley I feel these chords are riveting also, they keep haunting me long after I listen to them. It was even stronger while I was playing them and the boys' voices were blossoming into my headphones. It's me speaking. The poem came to me as I was listening to the music early this morning (about 3 am - one of my most creative times of day/night).

It's a virtual instrument of a boy's choral ensemble (samples of the boys actually singing in a hall with incredible acoustics) and it's from my Quantum Leap EastWest Choirs collection. I have yet to use the wordbuilder option (I should be able to have the boys sing the words or syllables I choose for them to sing!)... that's the next enticing challenge ahead of me. smiley

These QL virtual instruments are rocking my world on every front - I just wish I played piano better! I'd probably never sleep then, though!

Yes, EastWest does some wonderful sampling. And you've composed a hauntingly beautiful piece ... such that I would like to hear the music/choir alone, even though your poem (and delivery) is strong in itself ... I kept wanting to hear the music/choir alone, in its glory. Would you consider posting it that way or perhaps emailing that version to me?

PS - I have WordBuilder and haven't yet figured how to get it running through Logic. ugh! EastWest doesn't make things easy. Ha! Though they do make things sound wonderful.

"elamentory" dear Watson!! Great dissonance and you didn't over play the boy section. Sometimes overlaying a solo part and bringing it down so it blends with the choir patch can give it more definition. I do this with strings sometimes!!

Deep thinking poetry

Play with the dynamics more (louder and softer) and maybe break it up with more staccato parts at the end for climax

Great piece keep them coming. Your ideas are fresh and motivating smiley xxx silks well done carla

Thanks Zip! I appreciate that. And, Paul, I so get what you're saying. I have plans to play with the dynamics more and get the blend to another level. I was just so excited to get this up and get some reactions, as well as get it out of my head long enough to hear what I needed to do next. Know what I mean? I've been thinking that maybe we should do a duet we write ourselves, lately, rather than taking on someone else's work. Would that be agreeable to you?

Trevs - yep. Even though I studied piano for a couple of years pretty diligently, I stopped so many years ago that it's almost as if I'm starting over. But the beauty and allure of the sounds I can get from my keyboard now helps to keep me motivated and practicing almost every day. Like you say, the more I play the things I want to hear, the better I get at playing things I actually want to hear. lol Thanks for the comments!

Becs, thanks for coming by and having a listen. I, too, like the choral piece without the spoken word and I've uploaded it to Composer's Forum (that's where I upload most of my experimental instrumental and vocal music - well, that was my plan anyway. Sometimes, I get distracted. smiley ). I'll add the link to the description so people can just click on it to go hear the music alone. I think it's amazing on its own - in a way much stronger since everyone who hears it brings their own back story to it. Thanks for the feedback - I appreciate it. It seemed good to me but you never know how it will affect other people, especially those who have a background in classical music. I trust my gut on what I react to since I have a strong background there myself BUT it's not a world I remained in after I stopped playing french horn and singing opera and that was years ago. smiley

lol I have some cool stuff over there - like Magritte and Escher at Long Last Meet and Dreaming of Jessica (something I put up here the other day and then immediately took down (!) - I really need to finish that piece more to my own liking before I post it over here. I played around a lot with instrumentation on that piece and it's pretty sophisticated in terms of structure and impact for that reason - but it's a bit heavy handed (literally!) - I'm going to try and play it better. Wish me luck. smiley )

It took me a month to get my first mumbled choir words out of the program, lots of experimenting went on, but the quality was outstanding, not easy but worth the effort in the end, I like this track it has soul and quality in the production...a solid piece and a cool listen...

I think I've been a musician too long and NOT a lyricist ... I'd like to see your recitation posted so I may read it ... That being said this is a hauntingly beautiful piece of music and your speaking voice is a welcome surprise ... but then again as I think about it alot of singers speaking voices aren't what one would expect ... Stunning but I've come to expect nothing less!! smiley

I listened (several many times) to the music/choir version at Composer's Forum. (Thank you for posting it that way.) I enjoyed the ambiance and am easily carried by the flow the entire length of the piece. Lovely sounds and expression of fulfillment. Peaceful, actually, as I hear it now without words. With your words, I find it much more haunting. Interesting how the mood changes.

For me, I often enjoy music that is not word/lyric driven, for I can more easily go with my own mood and/or thoughts during the music. Of course, the music has its influence and rightfully so, for that is why I listen to music to begin with -- for its influence on my state of mind at the time.

Technically, there is a hiss or airy sound that seems to come from the boy solo sample, perhaps more of the samples, its hard for me to tell. I find it distracting, because it is forefront in the mix, actually covering the beautiful voices of the choir. You might want to look at lowering the really high frequencies on those tracks.

I listened to this then to the choir only version at Composer's Forum. I find the choir version very calming and contemplative. The complex harmonies keep resolving to create a very peaceful feeling.

I'm so glad some of you have gone to hear the choral piece without the text - I think they are completely separate events, that piece and this one. I love them both but like two of my children, in that I see their strengths and beauty as unique to each.

Thanks Tom, I appreciate that comment. And thanks to you, too, Zinc - I feel the same way about those harmonies. They resolve something in my ear/mind to peace also.

Becs - interesting! (Thanks for listening and thanks for the feedback!) I will listen again with an ear to what you're describing as I don't remember hearing a hiss - or, if so, not as such.

Thanks Toveco! And Afrocentrica, that's a comment I really take to heart and cherish.

Mattia! Glad you've had a chance to hear it and thanks for your kind comments. xox

Eagle, thanks so much. Really appreciate that.
