Luna asked that I post and introduce this song to you, so I will do my best to do so.

This was a very special project for me. As I trolled the day's posts on icomp, I ran across this song that had me in tears.

http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=147946

It was a very different song at the time, a raw nerve, no accompaniment, just a voice shaking at the edge of breaking down. It reminded me of the pure power of the early John Lennon songs, and I messaged Lunableu to tell her how the song moved me.

I asked her if she had considered offering up this very personal song as a collaboration and she told me I could have a go at it.

I envisioned a very different song...still her song, but a song that might have traveled through many years and many hands and voices and interpretations and a song that might have entered the realm of the traditional, well worn but ever current, understood by anyone...a “John Henry” of a song, that anyone can sing and everyone can feel in their soul in spite of their life experience. No experience necessary - you wouldn't have to have lost your daddy in a coal mine to sing this version of the song, any more than you would have to be a steel drivin' man to sing and relate to John Henry.

I introduced the project to a few of my icomp friends, and I described it as a “Front-Porch-Spiritual” (hence the Rocking chair in the intro and outro). I think that expression captures the mood perfectly, and everyone I spoke to about the project knew right away what I was looking for.

I recorded a scratch mix of the song and sent it out to a couple of people. Luna specifically requested that Elaine Ruby Doobie take the vocals on this project, and as you all know, you pretty much just have to ask Elaine and she will have something for you in a couple of days.

I asked Chris Pharmakeus to give me a couple of tracks, and I got these unbelievable harmonica and ukulele tracks, as well as some backing vocals that would make you cry.

I also ran into some interference. One icomper felt that I had “lightened the meaning” of the song and lost the “naked poignant air”, and flat out declined to work with me on this song. In deference to Luna and her song, perhaps he was right, I will let you be the judge of that.

I finally turned to Dylan and his arsenal of unusual instruments. Again, all I had to do was ask and in a couple of days her provided me with a variety of stringed instruments and some perfectly understated percussion.

I gathered their tracks, listened over and over to them, added a touch here and there, but mostly just tried to stay out of the way of the REAL talent...and so you have it, one extraordinary song performed by some truly amazingly people...

Powerful collaboration. Heard the Lunableu track as well, they're both strong and worthy of praise. Excellent singing, Elaine. Good work, mfwmiles.

To have my "little" personal song, badly sung and recorded move someone to the point of wanting to make it into a song for all, was an honor. So I thank the musicians who added their extraordinary talents to this piece. I thank Elaine (Whose name I thought was really Ruby for the longest time) for singing this with such skill and respect, capturing the right feeling to make this what mfwmiles had envisioned. I also respect the right of the musician who did not want to be a part of the project. We each have our own visions and creations and choices. It is that very fact that makes this site a great place to be. I am of the mind set that no one person owns music. It is given to each of us as a gift to be shared. That was my reason for welcoming this interpretation. I think the song turned out beautifully. Again...thank you, especially to mfwmiles for making this a reality.

Hi Everybody!

If you listen to Luna's original posting, you can't help but be moved as you listen to her personal story from her perspective.

Miles' instrumental, and Luna's lyrics, tell the story with innocence and heart.

Thank you Luna and Michael for asking me to join in this project!

Hugs all around!

Elaine

I think you have achieved everything you set out to do with this song. It has a traditional feel to it and sounds as if it would be right at home in the set of any performing folk group. I do remember the original by LunaBleu. It is touching to see her very personal story develop into something with meaning for everyone.

I hear the words coal miner's daughter and and am reminded of the superb film with Levon Helm, and listening to this lovely well written and well performed song I could also imagine the Band covering it. This is beautiful and wants for nothing. Maybe perfect is the word.

Little_Hooligan Listener I believe all of the fitting people were chosen for this project. My sincere compliments to all involved.. This had a very traditional, raw folk feel to my ears.. I liked that creaking rocking chair at the end too

Aargh, I'm torn by this song. On the one hand I love the production and the way it sounds, the production and performances are outstanding and the music pulls me along so that I don't want it to end. It's gorgeous. But on the other hand it doesn't fit the lyric. The melody and instrumentation feels too jolly.
Blimey, I'm struck at how risky it feels to go against the flow of opinion! But I just came from listening to the original that had me in tears so am likely biased by that. Like I say I love this track but don't at the same time.
