Snippet!!!!
I bought a Bass about a week or so ago just because I wanted a live feel with my Beatnikers tunes, but I have never owned a Bass and I'm definitely not a Bass player. So I don't know why the urge to write a song with only a Bass, but here it is. My first attempt at playing the Bass sort of just feeling it out (1st base). All instruments are the Bass (except drums) and were played live in cycle mood one after the other all first takes and all mistakes smiley I would be interested in what a real Bass players thinks of the concept and if they can point me in the direction of bass players who may have done something similar to this, and any other tips would be appreciated. And yes I intentionally added the distortion I'm weird like that sometimes. Oh Yeah song is not complete (snippet) just in concept stage so no lyrics or ending.
The picture is exactly the Bass I bought a Squier Fender J Bass same color and everything.

Liking this Moses, the distorted bass reminds me a bit of MUSE! I like the layering of the different parts and how they interact with each other. To me the drums need to be heavier and harder hitting, but as you say it isn't finished so...

I got my hands on a bass a while ago for recording purposes and have had lots of fun playing it whilst doing the bass player dance around my living room! You can't master the bass until you have mastered the dance!

You could check this tune out... Three bass players on one song, so it works with your layering idea, and one of the basses is even distorted!

@8MonthMalfunction yeah I remember checking out that song before but it's a little different then what I'm thinking of... To me they where soloing the bass but still had other instruments. My concept is to make everything the bass but the beat and if I can figure a way to do that I will. Now I will say they are way better Bass players then me which is obvious without saying it LOL and I can learn a lot from that tune, thanks for the link. Glad you liked it as an Artist it's always good when you step out there on a limb you can get support from others. Now what the Hell is the Bass player dance LOL.

Thanks falzaabi I'm just learning. I've improved though since this first song this was literally the first day, the first everything. I used to play bass on my keys so this is a real adventure to say the least.

@Soundhound Thanks Tony I'll definitely see he can give me some tips, I remember commenting on a few of his songs before... you play Bass as well don't you?

Thanks dr_elvis glad you liked it and yes I can get strange from time to time hopefully I can keep this a good strange you never know until it's to late smiley

Speaking as a bass player myself(since '76)this isn't bad at all! It sounds(to me)like you've written this on the bass which is an adventurous thing in and of itself ... yes Igorbassplayer is a monster bassist, also Tomdevine is a monster too! Me? I'm still trying to pass the entrance exam to kindergarten!(lol) smiley

Those Squire basses sound great and play great for the money, good purchase! Bass with a looper/sampler is really fun and an octave shifter adds a cool growl. Amplitube 3 has some really cool distortion bass settings. A compressor/sustainer is always a great idea with bass too, not to mention layering with delays so notes play on top of each other. I use a DADA tuning, it's like playing a 5-string bass with only 4!

@SCJohnson59 Thanks and I disagree with the Kindergarten stuff I've listened to your bass smiley
It means a lot coming from a Bass Player such as yourself that my 1st attempt doesn't offend you. And Yes everything is conceived from the Bass no tabs, no keys, no notion just me staring at the frets working it out or die trying lol.

Thanks for checking me out Eagle and well the Bass strings actually irritate my fingers but other than that it does feel good lol.

@BentAxis Yeah I love this Bass... And thanks for all the cool tips I use Logic & Line6 for my amp and effect sounds, I had not thought to change the octave that would make it a lot easier I've been squeaking notes out at the bottom fret. The Sustainer I am not familiar with nor the layering of delays but sounds interesting. I used EADG just cause the guy that sold it said that. I also used math more then anything to figure out things so far. I figured 4 strings 4 Frets and I could at least play every note in a key or octave. I did notices I can't reach some of the lower notes I desire but I'll have to try DADA. Thanks again.

Thanks and glad you like it Gary the sound will change many times, right now I'm just experimenting. Some will have vocals but not all and I always like to try new things the Bass was way over do. There are plenty of Bass Players in my family and friends plus with the ability to play the keys as Bass I made due. Once I started playing I had all these ideas I've never heard done on a Bass before, so I'm trying to research now and find others with a similar frame of mind. It's only been a short time (about two weeks now) I've gotten a lot better which I put my songs and a blog up to show the progression.

I agree with Scott (SCJohnson59)- it sounds good (and I agree with you-he is a great player). The fact that you are able to do this after having the bass for such a short time says a lot (nice mix too BTW). I like the fact that you are writing something specifically for bass and playing all the parts with a bass. And it looks like a cool bass! You simply cannot go wrong with a Fender Jazz (I'm sure Scott would agree). Keep going!

@AngeloA Thanks Angelo yeah I tried to hit the ground running so I wouldn't loose interest, now I need to read and find out the how and why a little, backwards but it works for me.
I'm sure you'll be fine with your guitar because you seem to gather a lot of intel before hand and you have an musical ear so the rest is just putting in time and learning how. So I wish you well though I'm sure you'll be fine. I put this in my blog thought it fit here as well...

@TomDevine An Icon pic is worth a thousand words smiley you should know a great bass player when you hear him because you fit in the same category. I appreciate your comments and encouragement though I know I have a long way to go but I promise to try and live up to the expectation not just from others but from myself as well. My first goal was not to make a mockery of you guys who have put so much time & effort into the Bass. Almost every band I've been in the Bass player and I seem to always hit it off right away. I wish they were here now to help me but that's how it goes sometimes lol (they are in high demand). Thanks again Tom I will get better and have improved since this song but I do not have the speed to do some of the ideas in my head are there any practices you can think of to help with speed?

@ShadowofNine thanks Dave for your support it means a lot and if you ever come across the name of the Bass Player that'll be super great and just what I need. My newer songs are better simply because this was the actually first day and I've gotten more comfortable with holding it and the ability to use closer notes on a different string.

Not bad for a total newbie. I had a bass at one point and tried to master it "blind" as you did.. it wasn't that hard and I picked it up enough to jam to straight ahead normal rock and folk songs even. I sold it though because I wanted a better guitar.

I love this journey you are taking. You already have unlocked one of the keys of recording the bass which is capturing the lows and mids to make the instrument serve it's purpose of keeping the bottom! I love playing bass on my tunes but often feel I play it too busy like a guitar.

@Rusticalia thanks, good to know it can be done. I think if I was more into the guitars this would be a lot easier but being a keyboardist you have to change your perspective for songwriting a bit. But even so I haven' met a insurmountable task yet.

@pete Thanks for the encouragement and yes the calluses are showing up now I must convince my lady that this is a good thing lol.

@brewchugger are those groups? If so i'll have to google and check them out.

@BossHook Hey Boss good to see ya and thanks for your support. Playing the Bass like a guitar doesn't sound to bad to me, better to be able take out the extra than not have enough.

@Bass2x Thanks for the encouragement like I said in the blog anyone with Bass in his name should know smiley on a side note that "Baaa" was hilarious.

@carlajpatterson Thanks Carla good to see ya. Yeah I can't wait either it's kinda weird though because I written quite a few songs now on the Bass and also went back and added a real Bass to some old tunes, my songs are better which I'd love to skip to what I sound like now even though it's only been a week longer, I've been playing none stop and absorbing everything I can on Bass. But I'm gonna try and keep the songs in order just so others can see the progression, and hopefully assist others as well who want to start a new instrument but might be intimidated.
