Despite my repeated warnings every year that I'm on my last Christmas medley, I decided to give it a fifth go. This time around, I had to do some research because I didn't like the songs I hadn't yet used. So I took to the internet for some yuletide discoveries. I ended up listening to a lot of church hymns and liked what I heard.

This year's style is a bit more unified than previous songs but far less subtle. This is probably my heaviest Christmas song to date, but I hope that doesn't deter anyone from listening. It has what I would call my compositional hallmarks (melodic metal, discernible sections, lots of strings) but with a few twists (not as much original material, more woodwinds, a celesta that I think steals the show).

This time around, there are only nine songs (seven new Christmas songs, one original and the usual "We Wish You a Merry Christmas," making its fifth appearance).

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this year's offering. Despite not composing a single full song this year, this medley has rekindled my confidence. If you're new to these songs, I invite you to visit the first four (2007 - 2010): A Christmas Cradle, A Captain’s Christmas, A Captain’s Carol and A Captain's Winter.

Merry Christmas, fellow minstrels.

I had wondered if there was going to be another. I had your others playing for a party several days ago. It's so obvious that lots of work goes into these productions.

Thank you!

Very interesting take on Christmas. Produced with fine gloves. Orchestration magic. In floats a child's dream. Jazz laced in nicely Wonderful composition.

I'd pretty much resigned myself to not getting one of these this year, so I was overjoyed when iComp helpfully tipped me off that you'd managed to pull a fifth rabbit from a fifth hat after all. Last year I played the previous four to my parents, so we listened to this one together too. Mum did quite a bit better than me at spotting the embedded tunes, although she wasn't terrific with names. I recognised four of the tunes (and could name two or three with any confidence), whereas Mum managed six or seven but didn't know the names of most (recognising them as 'French', which didn't narrow it down much).

I like this year's arrangement very much indeed. The interplay between orchestra and lead guitars in particular is handled exceptionally well -- several places where the melody trades between instruments are sheer genius. The dynamics work very well too -- a medley which is heavier overall could easily be rather one-dimensional (like my Christmas efforts, ahem), but the variations here remind me of the Ghostship series (which I still listen to, by the way, most commonly when travelling).

Bravo!

I like the way you built this song. It goes somewhere. Love them bass drums triples or whatever they call them. The strings are fantastic. Not sure if you would call this a rock opera but it's very cool. You could have added some vocals but *** works as it is.
Very nice. Great artistry here. Wayne

P.S.

Love it as it slows down and the additional atmosphere give off a nice mellow beautiful feel.

I realized that I never posted the full song list for this medley. Here it is:

We Wish You a Merry Christmas
See, Amid the Winter Snow
March of the Kings
He is Born, the Divine Child
O Come, O Come Emmanuel
Of the Father’s Love Begotten
Hallelujah
In the Bleak Midwinter

Happy holidays!
