The Old Troll. An instrumental with a mix of sculptured sounds, synth, and sampled instruments.

It is composed in the key signature of D in Dorian mode with a modulation to A minor and runs at 85 bpm. The themes have a bit of folk sound to them.

It has been an interesting process for me to create this. Dorian does not have a natural chord progression like major or minor. You need to take care to maintain the Dorian mood which is minor like but with an extra twist. And you need to avoid a chord progression that points to C major and takes focus away from the key of D. I think I succeeded in doing that incl. an 8 measure modulation to A minor.

The piece has two melodic themes that alternates, an improvised guitar piece and a 3rd theme during the A minor modulation.

It is a piece that works best with the volume turned up a little bit to hear the details in the sounds. Even through it is Dorian mode music the themes are easy listening.

A fantastic piece, Kenneth. My favourite yet! Love the sound to this - slightly otherworldly, yet still friendly - which is how i imagine a troll would be like smiley And I'm envious that you had a mandolin-type instrument in there! Nice progression and interest throughout the piece. I must go back to my evening class notes and find out what we learnt about modes!

@ihussain the instrument is a hammered dulcimer. I love the sound of that instrument. I use two versions. One is a sampled Celtic hammered dulcimer (the softer one) and the more heavy is a sculptured one. Both are standard in Logic Pro. And then I have spiced them up with the Space Designer plugin which is also standard in Logic. The fast paced notes are done partly with a small Akai keyboard with a built in arppeggiator but I ended up adding as many notes by hand with the mouse afterwards. I actually spent several hours getting those hammered dulcimers sounding like I wanted them to be. But it was worth it.

D dorian is the easy Dorian mode. It is the C scale just moved one position to the right. Still white keys only. So the scale is easy. The tricky part is finding chords that fit. The standard C or A minor progressions sound awful even though it is the same notes as the two scales. Amazing how the human brain is sensitive to such a little detail.

@Lagusaya2 it was to me too just one week ago. I made the Dorian mode tune for fun and thought I could use the white key chords I had learned just like that. But it sounded awful. So I started reading and learning.

The best reading material I have found is http://howmusicreallyworks.com/
This guy explains thing so everyone can understand it and without assuming people can read notes on a staff. It is all explained in plain English and in a slow tempo. And he also explains why thing work as they do. It is a very exiting book. The first 6 chapters are available for free and they are actually the most important. I can really recommend this.

Winter in Chna, usually grey and cloudy here in Chengdu but the sun is blazing thru a sunrise and your upbeat journey is a wonderful melody composing my morning soundtrack. Especially like the dulcimer! Great comp!

I really like this!! Lovely dulcimer sound and all the instrumentation changes that you bring to it. The Dorian scale makes it so interesting to listen to, definitely a fantasy feel. Really well put together smiley It ends quite abruptly though, to my ear?
