For Dorothy Johnson Atkins
Artist/Teacher/Mother/Friend
1926 - 2012.

As some of you know, my mother passed Sunday a week ago and I've been sick with laryngitis the whole time since then. This is the first day I've had enough of a voice to sing about it and being as how that's the way I process everything in life, it's something I really needed to do. When I listen to it back, I almost feel like it's the only way to sing this song at a time like this. The brokenness of my voice is just a reflection of the brokenness of my heart. For those of you who've already experienced this particular loss, there is no need for words.

Composer: Traditional
Vocals: Carla J. Patterson (née Atkins)

My hearts breaks for your loss. What a intimate, deep down soulful song for your Mother. It's a beauty, sure she would agree. Heal & mend soon, we love you. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.

I have to comment on the pic of your Mom and the quilt? guessing, behind her. You probably knew I would. xox Chris

Thanks Chris - I'm glad to see your post. Love you, too.

BTW, the piece behind my Mom is actually a painting - or, rather, 25 small (4 x 4 inch) paintings. smiley One of the coolest things about my Mom is that she never gave up on things she wanted to do. She'd been painting for most of her life but two things happened as she got older - one was that she had severe rheumatoid arthritis in her hands and it became harder and harder for her to work on large canvasses and one was that a lot of her art supplies were lost in a fire which she just barely got out of herself (that's a story in and of itself of course!). So, she got a grant from a foundation in New York and bought these small canvasses so that they'd be a size she could handle and then had my brother Frank help her make a frame for them so that they'd look like one large canvas. My Mom was tiny but she only liked making big things. (Re: the fire - she lived with her landlord in an apartment they'd created where a garage would have been. It was nice. But she was already in a wheelchair and when a fire broke out in the upstairs part of the house, she couldn't get out. But, some drug dealers (!) up the street came and got her out - they had been students of hers at the Arts Magnet school she'd taught at when they were kids so they looked for her outside the house and, when they didn't see her, they pushed they way into the downstairs part of the house and carried her out.)

Oh I'm so sorry to know you lost your Mum, Carla !
I feel so sad for you.
I'm sure that , from where she is now, she loves this intimate, beautiful hommage you sing to her.
You know I lost my Granddad one year ago (actually was like a dad for me)
Gone but always in your mind, always in your heart, ...always beside you

Thanks, Gérald... sorry about your Granddad too. It was so hard to have laryngitis last week because I couldn't sing for her so this was a big relief. Singing is how I process everything, especially the big things. She is no longer sick or feeling pain, she is free. And, as you say, she will always be with me and those who knew her in our memories. xox

Carla my heart goes out to you as I also felt this pain a couple of years ago when I lost my mom. This was a great homage to your mom! Lovely expression of sadness! ...Diane
