"If youre good, then life will be good". So true, isn't it?

When Stan sent me this song it was an unfinished draft he was still working on. I was immediately thrilled. Fantastic lyrics, melody, and idea. Stan quickly finished the lyrics and gave me free hands to arrange and compose additional music.

I think this is one of Stan's best songs and I have rarely been more excited about making a song. I hope you all receive it well.

Music and Lyrics: Stan Loh
Additional music: Kenneth Lavrsen
All instruments: Kenneth Lavrsen
Lead vocal and vocal harmonies: Stan Loh
Additional vocals: Diane Chayer and Kenneth Lavrsen
Photo: Stan Loh

It has been my goal to make the chorus at the end sound plain, happy, "folky" and spontaneous, and I have layered the voice with some formant shifted versions of my own voice to sound like children. This is all layered with Stan's harmonies. I also included my wife Diane who had her voice recorded for the very first time. She sings better than she thought.

I hope you all sing along at the end when you hear this song.

Crystal clear recording on this one! Love the change in pace, when it becomes even more country and western than it was before - interesting, as the rhythm actually changes, yet it still works. Love the harmonies, modulation and the unusual chord change in the chorus. And GREAT to hear Diane's voice! the harmonies (layering of sound) reminded me very much of ABBA, which can never be a bad thing smiley

@nlsn Thanks for the nice comment. Actually Stan and I have collaborated several times before. Stan is wonderful to work with because he sends a song with just a quick rough vocal and guitar and give me free hands to put the song together including adding counterpoint tunes, solos, rearranging the verses/chorus etc, allowing space to be a creative artist and not just a musician. And he is also good at giving constructive feedback when I send him half finished material for review. Stan is good to people he works with so I am sure he has accumulated a lot of good karma. You should listen to http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=181363 and http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=181115 which are our previous two collaborations.

@ihussain - Being compared to Abba. That is a compliment. Diane says thank you. "He cannot possibly hear my voice in the choir" she said. "Of course he can", I replied, "He is a musician with a sensitive musical ear" smiley

Kenneth, if anything I'd like to hear Diane's voice even higher in the mix in the next one smiley Yes, the chorus arrangements definitely reminded me of Abba, they did similar layering effects and raising of vocals etc.

Stan and Kenneth and Diane - you've delighted me this morning.
those lyrics are so damned good - if you're good then life will be good - oh yeah!
the whole bird/worm and who eats who is just perfect!
the chord progression supports the vocals so magically.
loved the intro - sets it off perfectly. the banjo highlights are cool - and I can hear Diane, too!
it's a fine tune you've presented - really enjoyed the way it was mixed, too.

Damn fine production, Ken! "Crystal clear" indeed. I can tell that you put a lotta effort into making sure everything is just so in your tunes and that's what makes the difference to me...puts you in a different league.

Stan's really pushing the envelope voice-wise...another great recording there...

I think you could do a "Hey Jude" treatment too on the final chorus...let it go a bit longer, for sure 'cus it sounds great and is so infectious.

Nicely-done to all!

@KCsGROOVE Thanks. It all started with a great song.

@Vixen First I will say that I am sorry if this ear worm will spoil your night. It has "spoiled" mine for days. It is a great melody by Stan. Diane's voice is sort of blended in. She has never sung before so it took courage to be recorded just like that. But it adds a bright sound to the choir that she is in it.

@SISTERS Yes. Stan's lyrics are great poetry at a level so even children can understand it. Brilliant lyrics. I don't know where he get it from.

@BigJimSlade Yes I was thinking of a longer chorus at the end. But that requires voices. Many voices. Maybe Stan and I will make a version 2 some day with a lot of you iCompers sending in voice tracks. I am also thinking that next time I have guests and they have a few drinks I will lure them into singing and recording the chorus. I take it as a bug complement that you guys want an already very long song extended further smiley

@brewchugger Yes. I put many hours of effort in this one. When you receive such a great lyric and melody it deserves nothing less. The one person I wanted to please more than any other is Stan.

@toveco I believe you were the one that introduced Stan and I to each other. You are very good at both mixing people as well as mixing music. I used some of your advice we exchanged by email and EQ'ed the bass allowing the kick to stand out. And it worked. I am very happy you like my mix. And thanks for beating Stan up to get better recording equipment. Makes it so much easier to mix in the whole thing.

This song actually contains 11 parallel vocal tracks of which Stan did 7 so Stan put a lot of effort into this as well. The remaining vocal tracks are 3 where I sing and 1 with Diane. And two of my tracks have been processed so my voice sounds like a boy. Artificial if heard alone but blended in it gives a bright sound. And I also added some "Ahhh" choir at the end, also blended in. Amazing what you can do with a computer, some software, and a lot of time.

Hi gang!

Hey, I can't take all the credit for the lyric. The original idea came from an attachment from my brother, Lincoln. There was another phrase that stuck out in my head that I couldn't use. It went something like: to make a thousand matches you need a tree, but it only takes one match to kill a million trees! Maybe this phrase will bear another child! hahaha...

...but the ant and bird bit was excellent...which inspired this song. The worms were added when I started to write it! And my aha moment was coining "karma-dama-rama" ... it came as I was searching for a rhyme for "karma"! And I debated a lot on whether to use it or not! Glad I did!

Kenneth is a master! Love working with him; not only is he detailed, but he is like a coach on the sidelines urging you on with ideas!

Thanks all for your supportive comments...I am slurping up all of them!

@RetroTrend Glad you enjoyed. Thanks for taking time to comment

@mrsmith Thanks for noting the fusion of genre. I always try to genre. It is a folk/pop/country with a little raga. I changed the genre to Folk and 2nd genre to Country

@revoltington @TomDevine @MikeRC Thanks for your kind words

@Gsus4 I am happy you notice the many hours spent on the sound

@ffej55 Yes. Exactly what I loved when I first heard the lyrics. Incredible mix of humour and view of life.

@jibes Yes As I write this it is at the top. Thanks to you all for making this happen. You are all a great inspiration and I have learned so much from all of you

@thsantac What more can you ask for? More! smiley Will be a tough one to live up to

@sprkymrt Yes I am very satisfied with the tempo change. In the original draft with only first two verses, casual singing and guitar from Stan he slowly drifted from slow to faster. And that gave me the idea of a large increase in speed after first chorus when the orchestra breaks in. And it really works well.

@pharmakeus Thanks for always being there with a comment. Yes it really sounds like a sitar. Because it is a sitar smiley smiley

Excellent guys, most excellent! Wonderful down home sweetness lives here. Insightful 'teaching us a valuable lesson' lyrics, whether we are young or old. Timeless truths. Love how a banjo? and a sitar can sound so very much alike. Guessing and it doesn't really matter what instrument was used, just love the sound of it. Very cool. Excellent work guys.

@reality56 George Harrison. I think Stan and I are OK to be compared to him. Thanks for your support

@zarizarikun @byerundee @Telemetry @Axelbreeze Thank you for your kind words

@A1K3M1 Thanks for the very kind words. Yes. In the slow section I use a sampled Sitar from the Kontakt standard library. And when the song speeds up I use first a quiet Banjo and as the song progreses I increase the strength and note length of the banjo. Banjo is a great instrument.

@tgallivan803 tgallivan803 Yes I am happy with the tempo change. Something I will use more often in future. The harmonies are so well sung by Stan

For the record this is about as far away from the genres I listen to as one can get. That said, I really enjoyed. It made me laugh and smile almost the the whole way through. I have no trouble hearing quality and this is great. You succeeded with the end, it is happy and folksy. I wish I could offer something more helpful for next time, but sometimes, like with this track, I can't think of anything to add. Great work guys, really!!!
