Classical improvisation is what I call this kind of thing... I practice piano in the middle of the night and then I do these improvs when I'm warmed up. Cellos are favorites of mine and I hear them singing to me at night. Thought I'd share them with you.

reflective feel to this, which befits the time of day it was made. i guess this was using the smart strings instrument on the ipad. i like the way that the ipad gb allows us to produce more left-field music such as this , even though the smart instruments are designed to keep everything nice and poppy. you just have to stretch what they can do to discover more possibilities. it's almost subversive.

If we get out of our own way there's music in EVERYTHING ... I promise you the New York City Subway system 'sings' the first 3 notes of 'Somewhere' from 'West Side Story' ... That being said, this is absolutely stunning and an instant Download! smiley

Plaintive and haunting at the same time...... this describes the long hours of night perfectly, when thoughts are running through the mind at those times when sleep just doesn't come; lovely, regards M

Thanks guys! Actually, these cellos are virtual instruments which I access through my keyboard. Over the years, I have invested in some very high end VIs using the Play engine (and a very few which use Kontakt 4). I have them hooked into my keyboard so I can improvise with them that way. While I was doing this one, I felt like I was sitting with a cello bowing the strings, the sound was so luscious. But, although I have played string instruments, I don't have any to hand at this point in time so I have to go virtual.

I have used the GB strings but they are too confining for this kind of work - they are more intuitive, though, since they are all about playing with your hands (like finger painting instead of using special brushes). I like that about them.

I'm glad to have your various comments - as always they help me keep experimenting! smiley

Haunting is the right word. This is lovely, Carla - and cellos are one of my favourite instruments, too, they can just send shivers down my spine. This almost has an organ-like quality, too in some of the combined notes. Beautifully done.

Thanks so much Iqbal... I agree about the shivers. smiley And thanks Soulima!

I had the coolest dream last night about finding a bass recorder in pieces in a shop and being able to reassemble it and play it. When I played it, it was like subsonics passing through the air and the ground and I started levitating! lol Wish I could hear that again while awake. We'll see if I can make it happen! smiley

Nice to hear you do like I do ,every once in a while I pick a virtual instrument and go wandering in a inward trip ,going to explore your soul with new tools ,I mean is nice 'cause you discover almost always new dimensions about yourself like you did with this piece.,So this past Sunday I went CELLO improvising I wanted to get some serious and I got instead the following link

When I was a kid learning to play with the violin it's exercises like these that killed me! Yet it's a must to help improve fingering and bowing! I guess this is what you were doing ... Your bowing is pretty good!

Nice one Carla! There is just that something something about 'that time of night'. This captures that beautifully. Dreamy, floating on a magic flying carpet perhaps. The Nightingale beckons, has a real 'woodsy/reedy' King Arthur thing. smiley Very cool.

Thanks for sharing with us, masterful.

Stan - only in my dreams, though - this was all keyboard-driven since I no longer own any stringed instruments in working order! smiley

Thanks, Chris! Cool photo by the way. smiley

Just an aside - I studied violin as a child for a short time (it hurt my neck to hold the thing in the proper place) but I've always loved the sound of a violin. Much later in life, living in Hong Kong, I studied ErHu (Chinese violin that sits on your lap instead of on your shoulder and which has the bow between the strings instead of on top of them). That was an awesome time - the ErHu can sound almost exactly like a human voice (one of the reasons I like stringed instruments, I think). Unfortunately, the strings broke on my ErHu a long time ago and I never got it fixed so I just use virtual strings now. smiley
