Some of you know from my post on FaceBook that I am in love with Adele's theme to the new Bond film Skyfall. Well, what none of you will know is that I am the proud new owner of a demo version of a VoiceLiveTouch from TC Helicon which I started playing around with yesterday. Today, when I got up, I just had to see if I could reinterpret Skyfall in a way which was more my style than Adele's - I love her version so much that I wouldn't want to just copy it. If I don't have anything different to bring to it, there's no point. Well, on top of everything else, I am feeling really appreciative of my husband Graham and this song's lyrics really speak to me about our relationship and that's the direction I took in this rendition. Just for you sweetie! You are the best thing that ever came into my life, bar none. xox

Original melody and Lyrics: Adele and her writing partner
Vocals and arrangement: Carla J. Patterson
Artwork: Carla Cryptic
Inspiration: Graham A. Patterson

I think I would have liked it more without the backing vocal elements and just left it you singing the lyrics b/c you did such a great job with it. I think you could turn this into a soulful new orleans sounding piece here. I am an avid Bond fan. and I approve.

I like what you have done here.

You have completely made this song your own and I like the layering of your voice. It works very well.

Thanks guys! O - A New Orleans version could be cool but I just love the way the layered voices fill the space with a kind of orchestra-sized sound. It's really exhilarating. KL - Much appreciated! smiley

What a piece to wake up to. Your awesomeness is now enhanced to a level far beyond anything I've heard you do before. An entire collection of work like this in a boxed set. TC and Carla....made in heaven.

Tremendous job Carla! Is this really recorded in real time? That's amazing. It's cool enough how the software creates automatic harmonies to compliment your voice, but you must have been playing with the loops like you were playing an instrument to add and subtract the harmonies at different parts of the song. This is top notch!

Great voice. I have to admit I don't know the original song at all, but this version is excellent.

Thanks Dadio (love your userid!). smiley

Thanks Paul - you're right - it's like learning to play a new instrument. There is constant forethought or you get lost and/or flub it all. lol The thing is, though, if you know your voice and have control over it (at least to a certain extent), you can get up to speed with the basics of looping and adding/subtracting harmony voices pretty quickly. The harder parts are getting the harmonies to form on the notes you play as you sing (either on a keyboard or a guitar that is plugged into the Touch). You can also use a source like an mp3 player or CD player and the chords in the incoming music govern the harmonies which come up on the Touch. Also, of course, there's just getting used to where all the buttons are and learning how to use them fluently - what excited me so much is that the voices it adds to mine are so genuinely mine instead of a kind of tinny version like is possible in many DAWS using pitch bending. Anyway, thanks so much for your comments!

Peter, you are such a sweetheart. Thanks for the wonderful feedback. Have you ever tried anything like this? With your voice(s), you could definitely go places the average mortal can only imagine. smiley

BTW, I think that one of the reasons I took to this as easily as I did is because I spent that year and a half doing my improv show on Ustream. It got me into thinking ahead and being fairly conscious of the results of what I was doing in real time, as a performance being watched. There is nothing to compare to that and it is a kind of experience I recommend to every musician, every singer. It hones your instrument(s) like edging the finest steel through use. Also, Graham (who has watched me improvise a lot, lol) thinks I have an innate talent for being in the moment while another part of my brain is visualizing (or, more properly in this case, audiolizing...?) what's coming. It's like everything slows down a bit and I seem to have plenty of time to make choices and to extrapolate moves which will work even when the music I'm improvising to is totally unknown to me. This VLT makes me want to go live on the net again! smiley

Great acap and interpretation. Besides the great voice, i do love the backing and see it as an unbreakable whole.

Bravo, this is what's it about in acapella.

Wowsa! You are phenomenal. Your skill, creativity, control & genuine talent is only enhanced with technology. Have not heard this song until now, thanks for introducing it to me. Playing this for Gerald, his response was who is this? I said it's Carla, he said she sounds like a professional singer. I said duh, she is a professional singer. smiley Love it Carla, getting sweep away in this multi-layered creation. Great work.

Thanks for sharing this gem with us, supremely masterful.

Thanks guys! Eagle - I appreciate hearing that.
Chris - lolol - good one from Gerald! smiley It is true, though, that using this kind of technology can take me to another level of production and, thereby, make me sound more commercial, if not necessarily more professional, get me? I don't mind. smiley Thanks sweetie!

STUNNING! Such an amazing voice. Carla, I'm now double impressed that you are a wow with technology too - I have no idea how the program you use works, but I love the end result! Incredible how you can hold the notes for so long, too - power, grace, control and impeccable delivery. You have made this song totally your own.

Thanks so much Iqbal! It means a lot to me. smiley It's actually just GarageBand as the software but the hardware is new to me - TC Helicon's VoiceLiveTouch. It's like a vocal stomp box but it fits onto the mic stand and is touch-activated (like an iPod). It included unlimited fx (225 presets and of course any number of combinations of the underlying concepts). It also has live looping (up to 30 seconds each loop) and up to 4 voices (plus mine) for harmonies. Best of all, I can tailor the harmonies in various ways, including through a keyboard or using a guitar. The harmonies follow your lead then. I'm going to try and do a video of me using it in real time so people can see what it's capable of (at least in these novice hands!).
