Solen er så rød, Mor (The Sun Is So Red, Mom)

For once not a composition of my own. This is a lullaby written by the Danish composer, Carl Nielsen. It was written in 1924 from a poem written by Danish poet Harald Bergstedt. Carl Nielsen is well known world wide for his symphonies and other classical works.

This is an instrumental version first, because I think the melody is incredibly beautiful and powerful even without the words. I may post a vocal version if encouraged.

The song is still being recorded by artists today. Often changed to a modern version in 4/4. But the original is in slow 6/8, written for voice and piano, and that is how I have chosen to play it.

The poem is about a little boy just gone to bed and he sings to his Mom.

It is about the feelings and thoughts that are awaken in a little boy as he thinks about the sunset, the night, the dead sun, the fox in the dark forrest, the cat outside, the stars. He wonders if the stars have boys living on them, boys just like him, looking down on him. Finally he rests as the stars and his mother sing to him.

It is a very moving song, and because it has some hidden layer that adults can put more into, it is actually also occasionally sung at funerals.

You can see the stars reflecting themselves in my eyes when I hear this song.

A stately lullaby, Kenneth - with a strong feel to it here in your arrangement. I don't know the original, but I love this - the snare drums are a great touch. The instrumentation also gives it an air of Western crossed with Scottish. Am I correct in thinking that this is your first cover?! Goodness.

It always amazes me how composers of complicated music can also have such a simple vein as well. I think of Mahler and his Lieder and now Nielsen. This is indeed a very pretty song and arrangement. I'd be interested in reading the Danish text.

Definitely a beautiful theme. Happy that you chose to retain the 6/8 time signature; 4/4 would have made this feel more, well... "common" to me. Interesting orchestration choices... It felt very Celtic/Scottish to me at some points, and rather Polynesian at others. How cool is that? ^_^

Love your description of this. Not sure why, but I feel a bit of abba in this, I guess that Danish influence, I love the folk feel to this. I enjoy very much the sweetness to this. I know in todays music that is pretty much lost. But it is so nice to carry that influence and provide music that has a cultural history! Thanks Ken!

ah ja den gode gamle sang. Godt mix Kenneth. Jeg havde faktisk også tænkt på og lave den for noget tid siden med en kraftig rockguitar langt ude i baggrunden. smiley

Thank you so much everyone for the kind words. I am deeply surprised how many of you liked this old Danish song. Carl Nielsen is mostly known for much more advanced classical music but he actually wrote hundreds of melodies for Danish songs as well. Most quite unknown. Some very beautiful. Some less. He even tried an alternative melody to our national anthem which never caught on. Some other composer won that one.

Iqbal. Yes. I have nothing against covers but I have so many melodies and ideas in my head that I rarely find time for covers. And if I have a moment Stan Loh has a long queue of songs he would like me to do with him smiley This one was just an idea I got while playing with some synth sounds on the keyboard. It is a melody from my childhood. I have made another real cover. I Skovens Dybe Stille Ro http://www.icompositions.com/music/song.php?sid=178624 which Stan later wrote English lyrics for and we did that one together. I may take up another Nielsen song one day. It is fun to re-interpret the old masters.

Thank you again everyone.

reality56 Listener Very very original Kenneth, love your version. And, as you I know the whole story behind the song; and also fully agree with you this is a great heritage from one the greatest composer produced in little Denmark. I"m thinking how could I forget for so many years and think this is just lullaby, great smiley thumps up.

Never heard the original, thanks for introducing me to it. Appreciate the description very much, helps me to understand the feeling & meaning/intention behind it. Dreamy peaceful innocence, dreams of a baby (child). All the wonder, questions & imagination through the eyes of a child. Lovely work/piece.
