I've never had the courage to let anyone hear this album. It's a one off that was a flow of consciousness at the time (1998) I wanted to write some kind of meditative music but as usual things developed and got a bit out of hand and I wound up with this.
It's stretching things a bit to ask you to listen to this as it's 7 mins+
The theme of this is the fine lines between man and his insatiable thirst for new technologies whilst nature quietly waits to reclaim all that is hers...

Your description makes it sound as if you're embarrassed in some way about this song. My question is: why?

This is wonderful... marvelous... phenomenal. And beautiful. And even at 7 minutes, not a second too long, IMHO.

Truly, this is a top-notch track to my ears. If I were you, I'd be extremely proud of it, rather than apologizing for it. Absolutely no apologies are necessary. But congratulations are.

Congratulations.

i am sitting through every minute of this, and i get the feeling i am going to have to give it another go when i can just close my eyes and give it my full attention. there is so much wonderful drunken lucidity (!!!) the musing of a really brilliant mind, it unfolds, it moves, it speaks and whistles and hums and screams and builds and it is indulgent and large and belongs to a different time. ah...and nature does reclaim finally, lovely...to the sky and to the sea...oh no, here come the cops!!!

why so shy? writing as i listen. we used to call it progressive music and it would be considered lightweight at only 7 mins! love that moog section fading into the outré. beautiful music that achieves what you intended for it. excellent. i hope we're going to get to hear the rest of the album

No reason to change that though. Lovely music. Well focused. Simple, with good evolution and variation. It feels like the soundtrack for a british TV series.

@padowan_learne I stand corrected by your beautiful admonishment! The truth as to why I've never played this album to anybody is that the memory of mixing this manually sends chills down my spine. Plus at 7 mins+ this is one of the shorter tracks. The album is called "The Moon in Perigee" and most of my muso mates at the time would never have the patience to sit and give it a good listen. Here on icomp that isn't an issue, people are prepared to listen regardless of genre or timing. I apologise to all if I seemed negative about this piece.

@mfwmiles Hey Michael thanks for the attempt, I agree, this isn't the sort of stuff you listen too whilst stuck in downtown traffic or maybe it is? The quip about being drunk is a quote from a very funny comedian on Brit TV (Paul Whitehouse) I seldom drink alcohol, only on days with a "Y" in it! lol

@jkane Thank you J. I mixed this using RSS which works ok on headphones and if you're sitting in the absolute sweet spot if listening on speakers. Roland punted RSS to all the major studios at the time at 25K. I had one on trial so I used it on this album but at 25K? Definitely not worth it. They subsequently included RSS on most multi effects units, even budget ones. One in the eye for Roland for being too greedy!

@telecaster29 Thank you for your positive comments (after my unintended negative ones) I remember having to endure 20minute drum solos by the likes of Ginger Baker with Cream live and thinking how amazing it all was, time was never an issue then. We share a collective memory...

@zarizarikun Thank you ZZK I'm happy that it hit a good spot.

@KennethLavrsen Thank you Ken, In a way I'm glad to have discovered icomp if only to give me the opportunity to play some of this album to people who would at least give it a listen. The problem with pro musician circles is their jaded and cynical attitudes toward anything that doesn't involve them as a musician.
Hence this album was quietly buried. Shame on me!

@Narananda As I mentioned in the blurb about this piece, it started life as meditation music for Tai Chi, yoga etc but it grew out of that and developed a life of its own. Thank you for listening.

@eagle Thanks "A" Again I apologise for alluding to negative feelings about this album, that isn't the case truly. I've never done anything like this before or since for the above reasons. However the only thing we can definitely rely on is "Change" The support so far is so encouraging.

@KCsGROOVE Thank you Cees I'm not ashamed of this album just reticent about playing it to people (friends, other musicians etc) because of the length of some of the pieces. I found it disheartening when mates would talk all the way through when supposedly listening. That isn't the case here on icomp as other writers like yourself are prepared to give anything a listen and give a fair appraisal. Thank you for your support it's much appreciated.

@Xolv It's the right song but a tired and jaded write up.
Thanks for your positive comments. One of the reasons for posting this is that I'm about to embark on a project with an old friend (painter David Halliwell {google) Back in the 70's we did a project together which was an illustrated Book/album entitled "The Singing Winds" At the time record companies loved it but found that it would cost too much to produce. That was then, now we have revived the project and it will be available as a download on my upcoming site musicians-collection.com (not up yet)
The book still holds its original charm and the illustrations speak for themselves. I've lost the original music and can't remember a note of it. Fine Lines is an indicator of the direction the new music will take.

How could I have missed this one ? I am sure I did not receive any notification from iComp, I will give them a trial smiley

This is extremely good my friend, a lot of very original ideas in that piece, the repetitive arp gives a lot of motion to the music, this funny theme with the synth is brilliant, the mix of synth and classical instruments is perfectly done and mixed. This fits perfectly the description you have written. I am in a awe my friend. This is the kind of music that gives me the frustration of not being the author smiley

You are definitely one of the best artists of that community.

after reading the info I waited for a good quiet time to take it in. delighted at the opening. nice ambient synthy start, nice oboe line, and then that bass hits, I'm into it. I'm really diggin this majestic build up, nice that you dropped back to the theme, its like a beautiful scenic wilderness. the ending made me think of how I was in my own world, oblivious to the noise of life then the unfortunate truth of reality comes back with the siren. very nice trip and sonically well placed sounds.

@grathy Then kick off your slingbacks and relax, popcorn etc is available in the foyer...lvq

@thsantac I tried to sneak this one under the radar Thierry! Please don't shoot the Mods! I must take your words as the highest form of compliment. I know how you feel, when I hear some of the really amazing music here, yours included, I feel totally inspired. It never ceases to amaze me how people use the 12 notes and put them in their own special, unique order. Thank you T.

@npaulp Thank you Paul(?) I agree 100% with you, there is some pretty awesome music to be discovered here, largely unspoiled by commercial pressures.

@ScottHorwath Thank you for listening Scott, I appreciate your comments. The exits from the mix are clearly signposted! lvq

@waveman Ah a kindred spirit, I mentioned earlier about using the original RSS when mixing this (mixing this album was a bit of a trial, I tried for the first time to automate the mix on Atari+C-Lab) So it was a steep learning curve for my tiny brain.
I really had to watch that I didn't go over the top with RSS with everything spinning in 360o. I am happy that you got the vibe of this piece and that you found a correlation in your own environment.

@revoltington Thank you Rev, it's nice to be able to offer something minus demented congas n timbales flailing away...
As an aside, I just had this picture in my mind of your avatar walking the length of Oxford St whilst flashing on and off, ah it's the little things that keep us amused...lvq

@toveco Thanks Tom, it's something a little left field from my normal hunting ground but a process I so enjoyed, I can only hope that it comes across in the music. Ps. The world is conspiring to keep me and my proposed Hackintosh apart for a while longer!

@ihussain Fine Lines is one of the shorter pieces from "Moon in Perigee" As stated earlier I've never written anything like this before or since. It took on a life of its own soon after I started, a linear process that grew out of nothing other than little gifts of inspiration. As a relatively uneducated musician I have to rely on those little gifts. I regard Thierry and yourself as masters in this field, so your comments are greatly appreciated.

@BigJimSlade I don't think any writer could ask for a better endorsement than that Jim, I'm thrilled that your family enjoyed it too. Thank you to all of you.

@Zzyzxx Thank you Z(?) Coming from a keys maestro like yourself I accept your comments with much gratitude!

@ShadowofNine Thanks S.o.N. I appreciate you taking the time and even more so that you enjoyed the listen.

@RubiDubidoux I love your blow by blow comments, they certainly bring a smile to my wizened old fizzog. I hope that a spoonful of sugar was surplus to medicinal requirements! Thank you Elaine. (smiley face x2)

I really like it. And I'm very glad you shared it (I can't think why you wouldn't, it's delightful). I can't believe you did it drunk. I don't think I could perform like that when inebriated, lol. I love all the timbres you have going and the arrangement is fantastic. The recording is so impressive for 1998, I was still using analog tape for recording back then (though I had a midi computer system too, so that's not entirely true). Really cool stuff. I enjoyed much.

After reading the title, the introduction and looking at the remarkable picture, I just had to listen to this song. It does not disappoint. The synths develop a cool little melody and I like the transition to horn as the lead. The flute arpeggios are perfect, along with the high strings. The bass then fills the void perfectly for an encore performance. The evolution from there to the end, with the combination of nature sounds (and unnatural sounds, smiley ) suggests a return to nature, a nice deconstruction of the complexity. Entropy returns smiley Deep and thought provoking. I like it!

@woofer3 Thank you John(?) I'm so happy that it resonated for you in such a positive way. I must add that I'm a little taken aback as to the rock references, however that is an unintentional bonus. I have to add that I have never listened to ELP as around that time I had discovered Brazilian Jazz and English rock bands always left me cold by comparison.

@LaFayette Hi Patrick, Thank you my friend, I'm happy to provide musical petit dejeuner to start your day. Smiley face x2

@PATROUX Merci P, Again I am taken aback with the rock references, I would never in a million years have thought that. Then again I am no expert on Brit rock bands, although I was once asked to join a biblical sounding Brit rock band way back (mid 70's) but refused as I had discovered the hottest music on the planet by then (see woofer3)I followed my heart, much to the dismay of my wallet!
Thank you for your positive comments, I am happy that this evoked such good memories for you.

@MikeBrooks Hi Mike Thank you for stopping by and leaving such positive comments. Again I am amazed that this piece evoked such memories and references. Maybe I listed this under the wrong genre? Perhaps it should have been Classical Rock! Smiley face x infinite.

@Tribrix Hi Trib, thanks for stopping by and listening and commenting in such a positive way. It was done on Atari+C-Lab (1988) originally and then ported over to Logic in '98. The alcohol reference was a quote from a Brit comedian (Paul Whitehouse) who played an old lecherous character who would perform monologues and always end each sketch by saying..." I was very, very drunk at the time" There is no way on earth I could have put this together whilst under the affluence of incahol...hic!

@videoscore I love this site. It brings together some remarkable musicians and writers from all musical walks. I really appreciate your in depth comments and positivity. I know that like many here, you know your onions, which makes your comments that much sweeter.

@RichardJohn Hi Richard, I think that melody is my only strong point, regardless of genre. That ability came in handy when playing other peoples music as a drummer. My approach to drumming was always from a melodic point of view (hope that makes sense)I so appreciate your comments,as we are, I believe, kindred spirits when it comes to melody.

@jrahn I'm glad you made it, take your time bro, there's no rush.
Thank you for your kind words. Comments like yours are to be treasured.

@music_man Thanks Scott, however I am really beginning to regret writing the "drunk" quip. Read my reply to Tribex above for full explanation

@A1K3M1 Hi Chris This was definitely a one off, there are only six tracks on the album and this is one of the shorter ones. The longest being 12 mins. Thanks again for your constructive comments.

@morgan102 Hi Morgan, that's a very nice comment, thank you. I'm really not sure that this could be classed as classical (I can hear the groans of some of the true classical musicians and composers) This was really just a stream of consciousness, it's rare for me to stray too far from my comfort zone...

@SOULWAVE Thank you for listening and leaving such a nice comment SW. I guess I had an innate fear of people getting bored listening to such a long piece. Judging by the comments people have left I guess I was just being a tad over sensitive.

@JonCSebastian Thank you Jon, that's so poetic, I'm glad you listened and felt the joy in this.
These days I don't play live anymore, I'm quite content to look out over the hills (Blackmoor Vale) and noodle on my piano.
Again I should re iterate that the "Drunk" thing was meant as a joke (see reply to Tribex above) but it keeps on comin' back and biting me on the arse...
That'll teach me to be a smart alec! Lvq
Take very good care my friend.

@Aamp Thank you "A" We must be psychedelic or should that be physic? lol. I'm happy that this tickled the creative node and got you going, again thank you for your generous comment, much appreciated.

I like the start and then perhaps with some soft backing vocals it would have added more to the feel. But you are talented and perhaps it suggests what you were feeling at the time you wrote this. Lovely bits as it goes on. Sounds like a TV show or film songs.
