When I can't sleep at night or am too full of ideas to sleep, I improvise on my M-Audio Keystation 88 with the headphones on so that my husband can sleep. It's the only time I feel relaxed enough to really let fly with whatever musical ideas are bubbling up from my subconscious mind in an artistic way (now that I'm not doing my improv show on the internet anymore).

Last night, or early this morning, I improvised this and I thought it was okay at the time. But, when I listened again today, I was amazed by how much of myself now is in it and how well it gets it all across. At least to me... maybe it will get something across to some of you as well.

The artwork was done in the middle of the night a week ago - I think they fit perfectly together, both products of my inner self coming close to the surface for a few brief moments. Hope you enjoy them both.

Improv: Carla J Patterson
Artwork: Carla Cryptic

I woke up at 5:45 am and could not sleep. And now I listen to music made by someone that could not sleep. And the music connects directly to me. Wonderful playing.

Thank you Kenneth! And you're welcome. Nice to share insomnia with the likes of you. I think we may not be a minority amongst musicians! xox

Lovely piece, Carla. A little dissonance, but much more lyricism. Can't beat that for an inner life, even if it's "only" for a sleepless night, and if it's for more, so much the better!

Gracia, Mattia! Means a lot to me coming from you. smiley

Thanks, too, Proliferousrose (wow, do you need a shorter nickname here at iComp!) - I was just reading your profile and feel we have a lot in common, even though our backgrounds aren't the same. Yeah, dissonance is a thing of mine... I've had a few collaborators into it also (like GeraldDeGroote and A1K3M1, just to name two)... there's something it does for my brain (sort of scratches an itch!)

I can relate to your description. Luckily my partner can sleep through anything, even my noise. Because I hate using headphones unless I absolutely have to. smiley

You never cease to inspire and amaze me, you can play the piano too? Not that I am surprised really, to me you are super woman and can do anything. And do it very well. I agree the artwork and music fit together, definitely meant to be. Glorious dissonance. Fabulous work, thanks for sharing with us.

Thanks Chris - wow! If Graham could sleep through my singing, I would be both happy and amazed! On the other hand, I'd have missed out on some great things I did because of trying not to wake him up (most notably Father, Mother, Sister, Brother with the wonderful Zamzam Ausur). smiley

Love, Carla

As far as IComp names go, I suppose "Pr" would work. There's a story behind "Proliferous Rose." It probably wouldn't be interesting to anyone else, but l like it, not least of all because it has a sixties-seventies ring to me. Almost as short as "Pr" is "Herb," which has the virtue of being my real name. It's not one I would have chosen for myself, as it has always reminded me of some dumpy, middle-aged businessman, but unless I want to go real sixties-seventies and change it I guess I'm stuck with it.

Thanks @pharmakeus and @JonCSebastian!

@Proliferousrose - Ooh! A story. I love stories. smiley Given the 60's/70's reference, I thought you were going to say Herb reminded you of, well, herb! lol I like your name a lot - it's just hard to read it all at once on these comment screens...

Thanks for writing.
