Original composition - what are the inspirations for this song? The story (spoilers) has always drawn me on an emotional level. I've also been watching some documentaries on Leonard Cohen. Final influence - my son is flying to the UK to live and work for at least a year (I live in Australia). It may seem a poor choice for topic, but as I said, I'm drawn to the relationship between father and son, and how they are each shaped by and manage their passion for flight.

I've worked on this for several hours over two days, trying to get lyrics, melody and chords to work together. The melody is not quite bedded in yet. I'm not much of a piano player, so it's a very simple arrangement. I hope it touches somebody...

Recorded on a Jamman Looper, with basic editing in Audacity.

Kawai ES1 Electric Piano, AKG P5 mic

I'm discovering that many people don't know who Daedalus is. This is extremely pertinent to the symbolism of the lyrics.

There is nothing like a song that has its roots in real feelings. That kind of songs touch our souls.

This is really powerful and beautiful and so honest. It moves me.

Oh, my goodness! This is soooo fine!!! So, so, so, fine! I absolutely love where this comes from and where it goes. Gorgeous musically and lyrically. Well performed.

If you have more planned for this, I want to hear it. As is, it is remarkable.

Thank you for the lovely comments,
@Ken and becwil. They mean a great deal to me.

I played it for my son just now. He doesn't know the story of Daedalus. He commented on noise in the background. I hear it too, but I was keen to get it recorded as a 'finished' piece. Later I'll do a proper production.

Hey, this is great! Super song writing, real, moving. Especially love the ending.
I hope your son has a great time in the UK. Our children are beginning to leave the nest. I am heading over to Melbourne from Perth this weekend to see my daughter who is at Uni there.

Thanks for your comments, @JimTheObscure @waveman. I wonder how many people picked up the mythological reference in the last verse of the song? Ssh...

I listened to this again last night and I am beginning to piece together the lyrical content. Would you mind posting the lyrics? Does this move from the perspective of the father to the son to the father again? Or am I just getting confused with the pronouns?

Really, really good song. And your vocal performance is amazing!

Yes, you're right, there is a conversation. I posted the lyrics. So glad you're appreciating the poetry in the song. There are a few different themes running through it. This is the Leonard Cohen influence. He has always been fascinated with, perhaps even obsessed by, love, ambition, failure and loss.

How do I make a name link?

or @becwil?

Nothing seems to work.

Thanks for posting the lyrics. That helps a lot. Listening again and reading along. So, so fine.

The name link thing can be flaky. Sorry. @becwil is correct – when it works.

Edit: hmm … worked for me. I'm using Safari.

I like the sparseness of the piano in this piece very much. Beautiful Rustic voice…..like a welsh Randy Newman. I am guessing you are in England…..there is a note or two of THE WHO in your voice too (townsend) but distinct nevertheless.. ….I really like the song and would be happy to try an orchestration to your track. All the best, Wesley Lawrence Curry II (Chicago)

extraordinary, moving, and not so simple if you ask me, lots of interesting progressions, the lyric itself is meaningful and moving, and it is a topic that invests itself in much of my music. i have even used that picture in the profile of a song upon a similar topic.

a HUGE fan!

So heartfelt, Geoff. I know that separation and angst about being away from a son all too well. I'm feeling blessed because my boys are visiting this summer from the US. Reminds me of the first time I let my son ride his bike around the block, and there's that eternally long wait until you see him pedalling back to you safely.

There's nothing quite like being a dad, but you've really captured it musically here. Bravo!

Thank you Jeff. Yes, I couldn't have written this as a young man myself. Life is precious, your children doubly so.
