Hi everybody,

A few months ago I watched Steve Martin's "Pennies From Heaven" with Bernadette Peters, Christopher Walken and other remarkable supporting actors. It's a dark and at times disturbing movie and contains performances that are moving and transporting. Christopher Walkens performance is worth a look as well as so many others. While not received well at the box office, this movie makes a huge statement that holds up even 2 decades after its release.

It was during this movie that I learned that "Pennies From Heaven" had an intro.

In the youtube clip below, actor Vernel Bagneris dances to Arthur Tracy's 1937 recording.

I can't hear this song with feeling a bit sad, but didn't record it as such. This song can certainly be interpreted many ways.

As always thank you for your time,

Elaine smiley

Love the intro -- I'm so used to hearing you singing in your upper register, so this was a special treat! (Love the rain as well.)

Great performance here. I saw the 1978 British tv series with Bob Hoskins and Cheryl Campbell. It was an intriguing story. Did you ever see 'The Singing Detective'? Anyway, nice to hear a song from you, Elaine.

Could it be? A ruby release?! I remember the movie but can't say I really knew the tune. Have you ever listened to much Tiny Tim? I watched a good documentary on him last week and it talked a lot about his love for Tin Pan Alley music...you might be kindred souls you and Tiny! smiley

I think the use was made for you, Roob! Nice job...now go do some more. smiley

Nice take on this song Elaine. There are lots of show tunes with preambles that get dropped when the songs become standards. These intro bits are apparently called Verses in musical theatre, the songs themselves are called Choruses. I find this very confusing as Verse and Chorus have a different meaning in Pop songs. Jazz musicians however talk about Head and Chorus and here again Chorus refers to the whole song.
