Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

--William Shakespeare, Macbeth, Act 5, Scene 5.

Demo of track 7 from my forthcoming album 'Brighter Days'.

==

Very often, simpler is better, and this is true of musical arrangements as much as anything else. The minimalist approach, of course, stands in stark contrast to my typical arranging style, which consists of piling layers upon layers until the whole thing threatens to collapse under its own weight. I was struck by the contrast from the heavily layered first section to the very minimal bridge leading into the second section, and how huge the solo prepared piano thing sounds when it has the entire frequency spectrum all to itself and isn't fighting to be heard over everything else.

Despite knowing on some level that simpler arrangements are easier to work with, however, I can't seem to let it go. A lot of things in life are like that, aren't they? We do things even though we know we probably shouldn't, compelled by some combination of habit and forces we don't even understand. Very often our attempts to resist these forces bring up inner turmoil and conflict which flares brightly and then burns out, sometimes leaving a trail of guilt of regret if we didn't successfully resist something we should have done. I'm going to suggest that this music in some way reflects that experience.

For those of you who've been tracking the Dark Days story, this track was originally called Inside. The self-defensive withdrawal from society of Alone now turns in on itself, as suppressed emotions threaten to boil to the surface and the protagonist begins to realise that a life of perfect isolation isn't the answer after all.

Oddly enough, of all the Brighter Days tracks, this one feels closest to the Dark Days atmosphere that I had in mind. I can't really explain why; there isn't a guitar in sight, and the melody lines here bear no relation to the original vocal melodies. But when I listen to the fade-out in particular, I hear the essence of longing in my heart, which is essentially what Dark Days was all about to begin with.

I hope you enjoy it.

I eagerly press Play …

Tinker Bell flying around. Love that bass line rise. Powerful. Then the bright and brighter synths and lead comes in – such happening melody and harmonies. Feelings of exuberance!

Now a change. A 180°. Not quite broken sadness, yet a real head-hung-down exit. Feet shuffling off the stage.

While the bummer feelings are not something to necessarily dwell on in life, I could stand for the outro to be longer. You do really pretty bummer feelings.

@becwil: Thanks for the comment! It's interesting that you suggest making the outro a little longer - actually it did originally go on a little longer, and end on a cadence rather than with a fade. I mentioned in my blog a compulsive horror of repetition, and that's why it got trimmed - fundamentally the extra part was no different to what had come before, and I was nervous about trying the listener's patience. As a kid I had the opposite problem, and would typically repeat things FAR too much, to the general dismay of everyone around me, so over time I learnt that it was better to stop sooner rather than later. People have commented quite often that I tend to cut things off too soon now so I guess I still don't have they balance quite right.

@becwil: Incidentally, your comment about 'Tinker Bell' is more appropriate than you realise. When the album's done I'll tell you why. smiley

It definitely relates to the Macbeth quote. Much harder to stop layering with synths; but easier once all the tracks are in and you start subtracting. The fade outro is fine; but if you wanted a button ending, you could build up into a "fury" Metal-like few bars. Thanks - Phil

@falconep: It will probably come as no surprise to hear that the idea of subtracting elements from an arrangement had never even occurred to me! Will have a play...

I really like the layered bits so I guess I'm like you. I like things to be worked beyond simple.
I did have the odd thought that this would make an excellent Petshop Boys track if you could get them sing on it. It has the uptempo thing going and the frenetic drum machine fills as well as the persuasive synth tones. It's excellent work, really.

@artneuro: Thanks! I must say I've never been compared to the Pet Shop Boys before - I can only imagine what my 18-year-old metalhead self would have thought of that! How things change... Glad you like the crazy, though. There's more to come. smiley
