We are emotional beings, much as we might sometimes like to think of ourselves as supremely rational. We cling to things because we love them (or because we hate them), but there comes a point when that clinging turns sour, and we have no choice but to let go or live in the past forever...

==

This is the first track that was ever written for the Dark Days project, way back in 1998 or 1999. (I wrote it in my first year at university but I can't remember which side of Christmas it was, hence the vague date.)

At the time I was still pretty sore from a series of events which I proceeded to fictionalise and (over-)dramatise into the storyline for Dark Days, so the angst was fresh and vital when I sat down with my guitar and started mashing away with what I then referred to as 'interesting chords' (as distinct from 'regular' power chords, the staple of every metal guitarist). In many ways this music has been a part of my life ever since - for almost 20 years now.

In terms of the original storyline, you might recall that, after his failed attempt to cut himself off from everyone and everything, our brave(?) hero(?!) reaches out to his friends in an attempt to reconnect. Sadly, it turns out they weren't all that interested. Oops. Reminds me a little of the saying that goes something like 'You'll worry less about what other people think of you when you realise how seldom they do.'

Perhaps needless to say, I have a different perspective on the whole business with the benefit of two decades' distance. While I'm not going to pretend I live in perfect peace and harmony all day long, I'm at least somewhat better at remembering not to keep hanging on to the hot coal that's roasting my flesh. In many ways, 'letting go' summarises the whole experience of moving from those dark days into brighter ones - for years I clung so tightly to the whole thing that I couldn't even make the music because I felt I wouldn't do it justice, then later I tried to bury it and forget all about it, but pushing it away didn't work any better than clinging too tightly.

My hope is that, through this project, I can accept and honour this whole experience, and finally let it go.

I have a close attachment to early ideas in my development, playing them, even decades later, evokes a youthful enthusiasm. It's fun to re imagine those "interesting chords" with the new tools at our disposal.

Nice job on this piece smiley

@mre: Thank you. smiley It's kind of amazing to me how even now I'll sometimes find myself with a tune or a riff stuck in my head that I can't quite place, then I'll remember it's something I wrote over half my life ago.

Great composition.
Most of us beat ourselves up over what we perceive others think about us, remember, etc. It's really just our conscience trying to teach us lessons, show us that we shouldn't judge others lest we be judged. On the other hand, those who try to run our lives when they've failed running their own should perhaps just shut up. But for sure, most people can't let go. Thanks - Phil

@falconep: True words. These days I'm much more likely to rely on what I hope is a well-developed internal sense of right, wrong, self-worth and so on, rather than looking to others for support and validation. On the other hand, we're social animals and it's hard to escape it entirely...

The relaxed pace of the opening brings a grandness to the space. The building intensity slams the mood into overdrive. Nice ease-up in the outro.

I like the blend of the rock-ish stylings with the electro-ish-ness of the overall sound. Excellent soaring leads. Beautiful piano, too.

There are tunes I wrote in my early 20s that still haunt my fingers when I pick up a guitar.

@becwil: Yeah, this one has retained more of its heavy guitar origins than most. I haven't really found a great way to produce an equivalent of the wall of sound generated by a couple of high-gain electric guitars hitting power chords within the range of timbres I've been able to produce so far with synths, but this track was always more about the mood than the heaviness anyway. (Is this a hint regarding the sound of my next album? Who can say? smiley)

@grathy: Thanks! 'Haunting' seems to be a recurring theme for me. It's interesting, one of the things I wanted to do with this whole project was explore new sounds and new ways of doing things, but a few common themes just kept coming up no matter what I tried to do. I guess that's the way my mind works... smiley

Outstanding. Inspiring to think of possibly revisiting some older moods in music and build on them through life experience. This turned out very well and is among my favourites of the album. Looking forward to the next!

@Aamp: Thanks buddy. Turns out that having experiences is easy but really learning from them and integrating that into who you are can be a bit trickier. Some of those old patterns (both musical and otherwise) are still very hard to break, but I like to think that I'm evolving slowly. I guess we'll see what happens on the next one...
